In the beginning of the story Flowers for Algernon Charlie was a retarded adult that went to the school Beekman College where he went to learn three times a week trying to get smart . He keeps saying that he wants to become smart and that he hoped that they can use him for the experiment . Dr. Strauss and Professor Nemur said that they can use Charlie for the experiment . Before Charlie could have the surgery he had to do some tests like the ink blots that he said there was nothing in them . Once he had the surgery he slowly became in love with reading and anything he could learn about . Strauss and Professor Nemur took Charlie to the conference to speak to the audience and to have Charlie and Algernon race to show them that he has become the smartest person . While they were there Algernon got loose and they had to chase after him . Charlie went into the woman's bathroom to get Algernon and he put him in his pocket . So they can run away together . When they got to New York they went to a hotel while they find an apartment to live together . Once he found an apartment they moved in . While they were there he made Algernon a maze of plastic that he could find around . So they can race together . He wrote a paper on the Charlie Algernon Affect and when he was done with it he took it to Strauss and Nemur to show them what he thought would happen to him . He went back to his apartment to see how Algernon is acting like . Strauss and Nemur went to see Charlie and noticed Algernon was there and took him back to the lab . Charlie went to the lab almost each day to see Algernon and how he was doing . After that sometime Algernon died in the lab . Charlie took Algernon to his apartment to bare him in the ground . After Beatty leaves Montag wastes no time and begins his night filled with reading. When he thought it was too much to handle, he went to his wife for her imput. But all she cared about was watching television. That was when he remembered a retired english professor that he once talked to, and figure that this man, Faber, would be able to help him understand the text. While he visits Faber, he learns of the value of books and the life that is inside of them.

The plan was that Faber would ask a printer to start printing books once again, and Guy would put books in the home of firemen, so that no one would trust them, and they would have to stop burning books. In Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes, Charlie Gordon, the main character, demonstrates great determination throughout the novel. Charlie starts off the novel as a grown adult at the age of 32 with an I.Q. of 68. He gets nominated by his teacher, Miss Kinnian, to get a surgery done that will increase his intelligence level. Throughout the story, Charlie shows great determination, as he wants to be smart to prove his family wrong, since they kicked him out of the house. She later sent him off to Warren State Home, a foster home for kids. Algernon is the lab mouse that races Charlie in the maze. He eventually starts biting people and not eating, and later dies. Dr. Strauss is the neurologist and psychiatrist who performs the operation on Charlie, and does therapy sessions with him. Professor Nemur is the scientist that is in charge of the experimental surgery.
He experiences, psychotic behavior, convulsions, paranoia, and more, Leonard eventually goes back to the catatonic state he was in towards the beginning of the film and eventually passes away. As Well as in Daniel Keyes, Flowers for Algernon after the surgery Charlie was using big words and, his IQ was very high, but he started to rapidly decline towards the end of the story and eventually says he is "going away" which can be inferred as the after life and/or death. It can be understood that although the results of both treatments were good at first, the long term effects were not well known and neither of characters had good long term outcomes. A third connection between Algernon's Flowers and the film's awakening is the similarity of medical ethics issues. On page 270 of Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes Doctors Nemur and Strauss fail to tell Charlie what the operation is, nor does Charlie have any sort of ability to understand what is happening to him.

While reading the story “Flowers For Algernon”, one would realize the operation the main character, Charlie, was isolated socially by the procedure ment to increase his intellect. This is evident in the fact that Charlie feels that he has been isolated. This is particularly obvious in the passage “This intelligence has driven a wedge between me and all the people I once knew and loved”.
