Fluency can be defined as an individual’s ability to read written text at an appropriate rate, with accuracy, and with expression. Fluent readers accurately read written text quickly and effortlessly. A readers ability to read quickly, effortlessly, and accurately is referred to as automaticity. A less fluent reader struggles with automaticity. They struggle to read at an appropriate rate. Additionally, less fluent readers struggle to read with expression. Less fluent readers spend a large amount of time focusing on decoding written text and sounding out words.
