The Renaissance was a period of rebirth for Northern Europe during the 14th-16th centuries. Many different aspects of culture changed throughout this era. New places and things were discovered, new art was created, and new music was made. When people think of the renaissance, they often don’t think about the types of food people consumed during this age or how it was prepared. A great deal has changed since the 14, 15, and 16th centuries, especially the food that is eaten. By discussing the vast and most interesting ways food was prepared, what people ate depending on their class, and how certain meats were preserved. we will be able to see just how different the world of food is today compared to the Renaissance. Renaissance food, like the era, was elegant and cultured. Meals were prepared carefully to be aesthetically pleasing and tasty. Soups were a luxury as they were very expensive due to the many spices used to add color and flavor. Food was prepared over an open fire, with pots and pans similar to the ones we use now. An interesting fact about the renaissance is that forks were created during this time. Although they were available to peasants, most refused to use them because they thought represented the devil due to it looking similar to the devils Trident.
