Football is known all around the world. Almost everyone has seen, played, or heard of the sport. Therefore, there isn’t much we don’t know about the sport. One thing for sure is that communication is an important factor in making any community or group function properly. However, the way a community communicates is specific to that particular group and the experts that are in charge. There has been plenty of research on how a football team functions as a discourse community and the way they communicate between one another. However, the question of how to manage the pressures of communicating between the levels of expertise has yet to be clearly stated. In order to find answer to this question I interviewed football players at the University …show more content…
Through these questions I was able to gather a conclusion of general sense of managing communication with the group. I used two previous resources to identify the community as a discourse community and to gain knowledge about previous research about communication on a football team. To define the football team as a discourse I used the six defining characteristics by Swales. Once I analyzed the characteristics I realized that this couldn’t be determined until I began to gain inside knowledge of the community and begun conducting my experiment. My interviewees were Duke Hollingsworth a football player at Oklahoma Baptist University, and Dahu Green a football player at the University of Oklahoma. During the interview I asked them general questions about forms of communicating in their group and their personal opinion about the communication forms. I choose these types of questions, because they allowed form a general idea as to how the communication works …show more content…
“It is hard to conceive, at least in the contemporary English- speaking world, of a group of well- established members of a discourse community communicating among themselves on topics relevant to the goals of community and not using lexical items puzzling to outsiders”(Swales, 2011). This is exactly how the communication in a football team works. All the talk about plays and routes could be quite mind boggling to someone who isn’t apart of the community. With both my interviewees being freshman learning the lexis isn’t something that they did a long time ago. Hollingsworth describes learning communication as just simply hearing how it says and eventually adapting it. This can be referred to the “ Repeatability of certain textual fragments to citation in its broadest sense to include not only explicit allusions, references, and quotations within a discourse, but also unannounced sources and influences, clichés, and phrases in the air, and traditions,”(Porter, 2011). Once a player continually hears a play he will eventually began to understand how these communications work. Green also describes a body language as a form of communication on the field. He said, “ In order to know if a players is ready to complete a play the teammate with make certain body gestures in order to signal if they are ready to continue the play. This connects to the idea of multiple literacies by Branick. Branick
Communication between administration and staff is very important and it must be a two-way avenue. In order for staff to be part of the larger group, it is necessary to read and respond to all communication that requires attention. This is important for day-to-day activities along with practice drills and emergency procedures. I plan to keep this
American football has many different aspects that helped change America today. Football has earned millions of fans to the game every year. The sport has changed and helped various people strive through life. At the same time, football has caused many downsides that have changed people’s lives forever. Through the beginning to now, football has been filled with many impacts and injuries that have changed the game.
This man will discover, to his chagrin, that hydrogen burns and oxygen sustains combustion. He will never succeed in explaining the characteristics of the whole by analyzing the characteristics of its elements (Rieber 45). When literacies are strung together to form a profile we begin to see their purposes and their personal flavours. A group of literacies forms a frame around themselves and the person which practises them.
We communicate in many ways, either by email, telephone, text, face to face, social media or letters and the language we use allows us to get things done, nonetheless the language and communication method in which we chose to use can vary depending on the discourse community. Much like John Swales suggests a discourse community involves a group of people who share the same common public goals, such as shared interests, rules, structure, and vocabulary. When thinking about the several discourse communities I am evolved in, which include family, coaching football, college student, and a few friends. These discourse communities have influenced me, given me insight of where I come from and tell who I am as a person. I also believe much like Swales,
For this analysis I’m going to be reflecting on how you can gain authority in a new discourse community. The discourse community that I am going to be looking at today is a high school tennis team. I was interested in reflecting on this topic because when I first started playing tennis on my high school team I didn’t have any authority. Then suddenly after one match I was one of the most authoritative players on the team and continued to be so for the rest of the season and the next year. This genuinely confused me at the time and I have never gotten a clear answer to why I suddenly had so much influence.
An important discourse community that was a part of my life was my volleyball team during my four years of high school. I started playing my first year going into high school and continued until I graduated. Until now I wasn’t even aware that would even be considered a discourse community, but it fits all of the qualifications of Swales’ definition of a discourse community. Goals
One point Swales brought up was that communication is necessary to fall under the category of a discourse community and that each discourse community must have a unique way of communicating (221). That is a way of saying that each discourse community must have their own language. If a group of people are really part of the discourse community, then they will be able to communicate fluently (Swales 221). Communication and language is a very hot topic in Gee’s article and we see that when he says, “Someone can speak English, but not fluently. However, someone cannot engage in a discourse in a less than fluent matter.

I came to a conclusion that choosing a soccer team was a excellent example of a discourse community and fitted with all of Swales Characteristics . It was very clear that every soccer team has a common public goal which is winning their matches including scoring numerous of goals to the opposite team, and not willing to let their opposite team do the same. They have a specific lexis that are used off and on between the field like the scoreboard, through ball, and square which makes them communicate between their teammates . One last thing is the communication that is used throughout the team which lets them notify them through modern technology like smart phones, texting, e-mailing, and even sending pictures of their schedules of games and practices. After doing numerous of experiments, investigations, and interviews of a soccer team it is very evident that a soccer team fits the illustrative definitation of the Swales Discourse

Davannah Knatt Communication Communication is the imparting or exchanging of information. At the work place, communication verbally and nonverbally is extremely important. In order for the unit to effectively grow, we need to improve our communication and it starts with the leaders. Once the leaders communicate better then the soldiers will feel comfortable and this will create a nonhostile environment. Better communication within our unit would create a better morale.
This point can be best illustrate with a basketball competition. Just imagine what would be like if a player did not communicated with his or her teammates, and then threw the ball to others suddenly. So people have to share ideas and exchange thoughts with one another
Each discipline is bounded by their own methodology, epistemology and knowledge that shape the language used and how one articulates themselves. As Wear (1999) notes (as cited in Bracken & Oughten, 2006), specific disciplines use terminology or ‘dialects’ which although sound like common language, can have different meanings and interpretation across the disciplines. The dangers of leaving a word unquestioned is the risk of non-experts acquiring a false sense of understanding which can ultimately snowball into further miscommunication and frustration as the discussion develops (Bracken & Oughten, 2006). In this respect, mentors can help to reflect on theses issues and facilitate dialogue on these language differences. This provides an opportunity for members to negotiate meanings and unpack certain assumptions and values attached to the word (Thompson, 2009).
