The Fundamental Contributions of CALL to Foreign Language Education
New education technologies have triggered rapid changes in language teaching. Using traditional teaching methods are insufficient anymore. The old teaching methods just focus on transferring information(top- down methods), rule-following to be memorizing and grammar translation methods. Needless to say, these methods are inadequate for teaching foreign language in the 21st century.
Researchers have done a lot of researches related to the major roles of computers in language learning. Some articles by researchers such as Kulik and Kulik (1987), McNeil and Nelson (1991) showed the positive effects of CALL on instruction.

Learning a second language at a younger age is beneficial Most little kids first day of school is when they are approximately five years old, and about to enter kindergarten. Kids go to school from about age five till graduation from high school at about age eighteen. Most schools focus on the basic core subjects, such as math, reading, science and history. Until junior high or high school, foreign language is not even offered.
Clara is a student in the class I help. She is an English Language Learner (ELL) student. When interacting with Clara I was able to realize that she is a very bright student, she is very motivated and has a goal in mind. One afternoon during homework help she opened up to me and talked about her family; she told me that they where from Guatemala. Her mom had her when she was very young and that because having a child is too much work the mom had to stop going to school.

“You can’t see other people’s point of view when you have only one language,” declared psycholinguist, Frank Smith. Just as it is mentioned in this quote, foreign language is important; therefore, people should learn a foreign language at an early age. When learning a foreign language at an early age, it helps people to concentrate and increase comprehension skills. Also, at a young age, the mind is fresh, so the person can take in more information and can easily master a foreign language. In addition, most secondary schools, universities, and jobs require a foreign language to be known.
Research Questions From the literature review, it was established that there were several factors affecting language learning and acquisition. More specifically, it was revealed that factors such as exposure at an early age, motivation, attitudes, incentives and educational system can influence language acquisition. However, most of the research were conducted in the west and were focused on students as subjects to the study and foreigners working in the country where they need to learn the language to lengthen their range of employment opportunity.
They argue that “technology can be an important tool that can have a major positive impact on language learning” (p. 43). They also stress the use of the Internet as a key part of this impact, with its usage able to improve critical thinking skills of students, their ability to search and synthesize information and also the skill of developing their language skills through the constant use of English. The use of the Internet should be seen as a valuable tool, mainly because of the dominant use of the English language for most of the Websites online, as well as the capability of translating text to help them understand English. Their study does provide warnings for teachers though. It notes that Internet access can be an important function in the ESL classroom, but it is important to “keep track of which students are using the computers”, as well as to keep an eye on the content that they are viewing because there are many distractions online (p. 43).
