Introduction One may wonder why we go to work each day and why children may look forward to going to school and doing particular tasks. Is it because these activities are fun, or the rewards attached to doing particular tasks are good. It is important to understand some factors of motivation and as teachers, be able to motivate students to excel

Define motivation and discuss its importance to teaching and learning

Defining Motivation
1. Motivation is an internal process that guides, activates and maintains behaviour overtime (Baron, 1998)

2. Motivation explains why people behave the way they do, motivated behaviours are energized, directed and sustained (Santrock, 2001, p.394)

3. Motivation is the influence of needs and desires on the intensity and direction of behaviour (Slavin, 2000, p.327)
4. Desire or want that energizes and directs goal-oriented behaviour.
