Jensen,Hetherington, Merkle, Mrs. Wickett Period-¾ 20 Oct. 2016 Leaders and Heroes during the Revolutionary war “We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately”. said Benjamin Franklin during the Revolutionary War. These words like many other words during this rough period of time, helped the patriots obtain independence from Great Britain. This was the war allowing the United States of America to become a country. America was able to beat the British because of many heroes and leaders.
The Revolutionary Era (1764-1789) (www.americaslibrary.gov) the era set up the fall for Great Britain. It would bring nations that were once under the tyranny of the king to become military and economic power houses in the future, the United States of America is one of these nations. Hamilton defended Loyalists against the rebels .In 1784, Hamilton took on the Rutgers v. Waddington case, which involved the rights of Loyalists. It was a landmark case for the American justice system, as it led to the creation of the judicial review system [Histon, 223,229,241]. He accomplished another history-making feat that same year, when he assisted in founding the Bank of New York. In defending the Loyalists, Hamilton instituted new principles of due process. Hamilton went on to take an additional 45 trespass cases, and proved to be instrumental in the eventual repeal of the Trespass Act, which had been established in 1783 to permit rebels to collect damages from the Loyalists who had occupied their homes and businesses.

In short, the major battle during that period is what we came to learn as the Seven Years War between England and France. The war costs many lives on both sides and the root cause of the war was there was major struggle between European powers (The French and Indian War, “n.d.”). The colonial war lasted a long time and it expanded across the continent and eventually involves countries such as England, Russia, Prussia, Spain, France and others. Similarly, in 1716, Governor Alexander Spotswood, of Virginia warned the British government about the threat posed by the French in North America, stating, “They surround all the British Plantations” (Reich, 2011, p. 253).
In 1780, the American side got a major boost from the French as Comte de Rochambeau arrived with 5,500 troops in Newport, Rhode Island. During the time of Rochambeau’s arrival, Sir Henry Clinton attempted to capture New York City while General Charles Cornwallis was in the southern colonies. Washington and his men were stationed along the Hudson River. In the summer of 1781, Washington and Rochambeau met to plan an attack on Henry Clinton. Washington wanted to coordinate the attack with the French fleet that was to arrive in New York City.

The new colonies beat the British using new forms of military strategy, communication and ideas, and various acts of defiance, to win there independence. Without the cunning tactics used by the leaders of the earliest colonial militias and there perseverance, the new colonies would never have claimed independence from the grip of Britain. On June 15, 1775, Washington was appointed Major General and Commander-in-Chief of colonial forces. Washington was the colonies’ best choice because he had experience, had been advising the congress, and the biggest factor that went into it was that if he had not been given the job Virginia, a key colony in the resistance, would have backed out. Washington’s troops were not very successful and they lost many battles, but they were victorious in March of 1776 when they forced the British to withdraw from Boston. He then moved his troops to New York City where they fought in the largest battle of the revolution. The british army launched an attack that killed 2,800 men.
