“You have seen how a man was made a slave; you shall see how a slave was made a man.” -(Frederick Douglass). Slavery is the system in which a person own slaves. This practice has been going on for hundreds of years. A lot of famous people were once slaves themselves. One of the most famous former slaves was Frederick Douglass. He was born in the year of 1818. Mr.Douglass was raised by his grandma until he was old enough to be sold into slavery. While in slaved his mistress taught him the A,B,Cs. Mrs.Auld was not the average slave mistress. Before Mr.Auld she had not ever owned a slave. She made the slaves that her and Mr.Auld owned feel at ease when they were around her. She was teaching young Frederick his A,B,Cs until her husband found out and put a stop to the lessons. Mr.Auld felt that if you taught a slave how to read that the slave would not be able to do his job. He used what he learned so far to give him the drive he needed to get his freedom. After Mr.Auld put a stop the lesson Frederick used the letters that he knew and started put words together. Before long he knew how to read the signs around town. When it was time for him to escape he knew where he was going. The lesson that I got from this that you never stop learning. He did not let the fact that someone had stop teaching him stop him from learning. He used his story to help others get out of slavery. When he escaped up north he started his new life as a free man. He had encountered many new freedoms that he had never experienced before. But while free he saw how bad slavery could be.
