For example, Banneker uses two important pieces of sources, the Declaration of Independence and the Bible, to show just how wrong slavery is. According to his letter, “Put you souls in their soul’s stead thus shall your hearts be enlarged with kindness and benevolence towards them, and thus shall you need neither the direction of myself or others, in what manner to proceed herein.” He relates to the bible of how you should put yourself in the perspective of slaves to understand them and what they go through. Once you put yourself in their position, you will be filled with “kindness” and “benevolence” towards them. Understanding the struggle slaves go through, working every day, no rights, and freedom, you will put an end to slavery. In addition, Banneker uses the Declaration of Independence to stress the importance of freedom and rights for slaves.
African Americans were not treated fairly during slavery. African Americans are just like everyone else and deserve the same right as everyone else, no one should be treated differently by their skin color. Frederick Douglass and Paul Dunbar both talk about slaves and being treated unfair. They both use personal experience to support their ideas. Paul Laurence Dunbar uses conflict in “we wear the mask” to get his point across about African Americans being treated unfairly after slavery ended.

Through Douglass’s use of figurative language, diction and repetition he emphasizes the cruelty he experiences thus allowing readers to under-stand his feelings of happiness, fear and isolation upon escaping slavery. Figurative language allocates emotions such as excitement, dread and seclusion. As a slave you have no rights, identity or home. Escaping slavery is the only hope of establishing a sense of self and humanity.
The autobiography, The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, written in 1845 in Massachusetts, narrates the evils of slavery through the point of view of Frederick Douglass. Frederick Douglass is a slave who focuses his attention into escaping the horrors of slavery. He articulates his mournful story to anyone and everyone, in hopes of disclosing the crimes that come with slavery. In doing so, Douglass uses many rhetorical strategies to make effective arguments against slavery. Frederick Douglass makes a point to demonstrate the deterioration slavery yields from moral, benevolent people into ruthless, cold-hearted people.
It makes us free and it avoid us to be enslaved, too. However, literacy turns out to be not only bliss, but also painful. A famous conversation took place between a slave master and his slave. The slave disputed every argument his master had for slavery. This conversation ended in the voluntary emancipation of the slave on the part of the master. This showed me that words can be as strong as actions, and that there was hope for me.
