¨Freedom means you are unobstructed in living your life as you choose. Anything less is a form of slavery.¨ This is similar to Frederick Douglass because he lived his most of his life in slavery and then after slavery ended he chose to live his life the way he wanted. Frederick Douglass was an African American slave who wanted to abolish slavery after hearing the word abolish so many times. Douglass´s audience were many other African Americans who also said slavery was a bad thing. How slavery was bad for slaves and how it corrupts slave owners.
They provoked many hostile responses. There were many mobs that occurred and even abolitionist editor Elijah Lovejoy died. Abolitionists’ actions consequently promoted a gag rule that banned anti-slavery petitions in the House of Representatives. Abolitionists made the South believe the North was against them due to the abolitionists’ actions and beliefs (Stewart, J. B., 1991).
Secondly the south wanted to leave the union because Uncle Tom’s Cabin was published. In document 4 it states “She wrote this book to show that slavery was evil and that the Fugitive Slave Law was unjust. This would convince or show how evil and wrong slavery is and more people would want to abolish slavery. If they didn’t secede they would lose slavery. So to stop people in the South to be convinced that slavery is wrong the South left the union.
After being separated from his mother at a young age, Frederick Douglass fights back against slavery and human rights. In Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, the author, Frederick Douglass, uses powerful rhetoric to disprove the Pragmatic and the Scientific pro-slavery arguments of Pre-Civil War America. The Pragmatic Argument is about how many people believe that if all black slaves were to be freed, then this would result in convulsions which would then lead to extermination of the one or other race. Many people also believed that black slavery was necessary for American history. Douglass disproves this argument in many ways.
Mr. Auld claimed teaching slaves to read was unlawful and not safe, if you give a slave a little they will take the whole lot. He also mentioned that slaves who could read weren't slaves anymore. I found a particular sentence from Mr. Auld interesting "It would make him discontented and unhappy" (Douglass,250). That sentence alone shows the lies that were spread in order to justify the nature of slavery. I have read a lot of work on slavery thanks to my mother, during my reading I learned about how slaveholders would comment on how their slaves are happy on the plantation.

Throughout the 19th century, many African American slaves lived a highly controlled life. They were forbidden from learning to read and write, and their movement and behavior was restricted. In the early 1830s, many people began realizing that slavery was an inhumane practice and antislavery groups started forming. Early antislavery societies believed that slavery had to be stopped gradually. Their primary goal was to put an end to slave trading.
People in the North believed that slavery was inherently evil and inhumane, but the South disagreed, believing that slaves were property and leaving all possible work on the plantations, up to them. The two main problems in the south were how do we rebuild the south? And what would we do with the freed slaves? This became big problems that was during the time of reconstruction. I believed that the South killed reconstruction because of violence promoted towards blacks in the South by the Ku Klux Klan. The south wanted to end all reconstruction effort.
Harriet just didn 't free herself, she also went back and freed other slaves that were also in search for a new life. Harriet Tubman made this happen because she knew what the slave owners were doing to them was wrong and they wanted a better life for themselves so they took matters in their own hands and were willing to risk their life to be free from all the hatred, pain and despair. The actions and words of Andrew Johnson were very contradictory. The cartoon states: "Treason is a crime and must be made odious, and traitors must be punished". He told the people of a reconstruction plan that was supposed to punish the confederate rebels. Johnson did the opposite by ordering many pardons The Northern Republicans in Congress were ostracized because he continually vetoed their attempts at reconstruction. In the center of the cartoon, Johnson is holding the African American in a slavery auction.
Slaves were forbidden to learn how to read and write because slave owners wanted to keep slaves ignorant and dependent upon them. Likewise slave owners thought that educating the slaves would harm the system of slavery. For instance laws were created in several states illegally forbidding slaves to learn to read and write. I believe slave owners took such a hard stance on educating slave because they felt that slaves would start to want more (i.e. freedom) and that education of slaves would be what ended slavery.

This movement held risky and radical tactics in order to bring an end to slavery. The abolitionist movement was the instant liberation of all slaves as well as the end of racial discrimination and segregation. The abolitionist were a small minority of Americans who supported the emancipation and equal rights for all African Americans during the 1930s through 1870. This movement stated in 1830 after it was motivated by Christian percepts.
