The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain showcases a story where society upholds racial discriminations that clearly set a line between slaves and those who own them. In the novel whites are superior while black people are below them and are practically just objects that can be sold and replaced. The way that society functioned and the abuse that Huck received is what made him decide to leave and find his freedom. Jim, a slave who was gonna be sold also decides to leave in order to obtain his freedom. Both Huck and Jim leave their homes and families to go on a journey to find their freedom.
In America, opposition to slavery started with acts of defiance such as “slave resistance”, where African American slaves would rebel in several ways to attain greater freedom. While this “revolution” gathered steam, with slaves often running away from their masters and finding shelter in swamps, lakes or in cities that believed in their cause, more organized forms of opposition, led by reformers like William Garrison (Document E), who founded The American Anti-Slave Society, also started gaining traction. The growing opposition to slavery, by both slaves and their white sympathizers, eventually culminated in a determined abolitionist movement that highlighted the plight of so many and galvanized public opinion against an appalling institution.

During a time of civil unrest caused by racial tensions throughout the country preceding the Civil War, men who were born into captivity and slavery but rose above their background to become a prominent member in their community calling for social reform sometimes wrote what is referred to as a slave narrative. Each author wrote their autobiography for their own reasons, such as proving to the public that they were once a common slave or simply telling their story. Nonetheless, whether intentional or not, these authors often successfully advocated a case against slavery through employing rhetoric to convince both the white and colored audiences that change was needed. Frederick Douglass wrote his narrative as a freeman, therefore, he is able to reflect on his life as a slave and decode the cryptic artifice of his former slave owners. Douglass lived a harsh life in the south before he made his valiant escape to the north, in order to evade further physical and mental torture. Therefore, Douglass is able to understand what it is like to be an invisible entity with a lack of identity, on physical earth. Metaphors are like string that Douglass uses to weave together a cohesive argument to support the eradication of slavery. As Douglass reminisces on his life he states that he “was made to drink the bitterest dregs of slavery...” (Douglass) Slavery, in this instance, is taken out of its literal context and liquefied in order to emphasize that it was hard for Douglass to swallow and digest the painful sorrow that it caused thousands of African Americans.
These slave narratives gave the most powerful accounts that contradicted the flattery statements and claims given by slave owners in concern to slavery. These narratives gave accounts of the abuse done to slaves both physically, sexually and emotionally, the fear and brutality of floggings, the horrid conditions they were kept in, the fear of separation from their families.
