Taylorism is a scientific management theory, created by Fredrick Winslow Taylor around the 1880s.His aim as to increase efficiency in the workplace. His theory was very popular around 1910, but was eventually highly criticised. Taylor created this theory for a number of reasons, but one reason was to battle the idea of “natural soldiering”, this is the natural instinct that people have to just take it easy. The workers knew that is they worked harder the supervisors and managers would realise that it was possible to increase production and thus they would be made to work harder. Although this theory had its advantages, workers grew very bored of doing the same task day after day. They began to feel like cogs and wheels of a machine with no real sense of accomplishment. The separation between management and workers was also an issue. The managers were being paid more money for simply supervising. Whereas the actual workers were being paid less for much more physically exerting work. Factories were very dependable on one individual doing one job. Call centres are a perfect example of this. Call centres are managed by Taylorism. Call centres operate like a machine. The number of calls taken and the duration of these calls by a worker are important, this is with an aim to producing costs. Everything is timed, possibly even the bathroom breaks for a worker. Again if a workplace is viewed like a machine, workers will feel underappreciated and will underperform, much like those in the factories. The management side of a call centre is also very similar to that in the factories when Taylorism was at its peak, supervising the workers but actually doing any of the work. Their main aim is to hit targets with calls and this may not benefit the customer on the end of the phone. Another example of an industry still operating under Taylorism is the fast food industry. Restaurants like mcdonalds and Burger King have clear elements of scientific management. They use the same method for doing a job, any staff member will make a burger the exact same as the staff member that was on the shift before them. Each staff member is trained in a task so they become specialised in it. Their aim is that every burger or product they make comes out the exact same. They want to maximise production and sales, they want to become more and more
