I would like to take this opportunity to express my thoughts, observations, and reflections on the academic writing that was presented within the Capella University writing course. The enclosed portfolio will provide additional detail to what I have learned throughout this course, and showcase my strengths and weaknesses.
In the article “FREEWRITING”, the author, Peter Elbow, explores the concept of freewriting. Elbow defines freewriting as, when you write nonstop for ten or more minutes without looking back at what you have written, ignoring punctuations, grammar mistakes, and “sounding right”. Elbow explains that freewriting helps you utilize your individual voice when writing. Freewriting helps your voice by creating a straight/fast path from conscious thought to writing on paper. Freewriting voids the simultaneous editing processes (grammar, spelling, and political correctness) that most people go through when writing, which then makes the written text dull/bland and equally makes writing harder. As I reflect at the end of this semester on my work in my English 101 class, I am able to already see how much I have improved as a writer. This class has taught me many things and helped me grow and develop my skills as a writer. It has taught me how to use clear concrete details in my writings. I engaged in several assignments and peer workshop during this semester, and the feedback that I received from my professor and peers has helped me a lot.
I am writing to you on the past semester that we 've spent together. I enjoyed taking this class because I think that it helped me improve my writing skills and helped me become a better writer. Before taking this class I didn 't believe to think that I could to be a good writer. But you had a great system with different forms of writings to help conquer me and my fellow classmate’s fears in writing. I enjoyed the short writing assignments the most, because it was entertaining and different. My work reflected me, my personality, my thoughts, and of course my ideas which was great. In the article The Writing Revolution by Peg Tyre, the far too common unfortunate example of a school system failing to equip its students with the proper writing skills necessary to be successful students is examined. While this failure is a phenomenon that ails students worldwide, I was fortunate enough to receive a high school education that excelled in this area and helped prepare me for college and beyond. The first method my school used was to assign mandatory writing assignments every week, which forced me to practice repeatedly and prefect the skill. Additionally, on each assignment my teachers provided me one-on-one meetings to discuss the paper content, which allowed me to receive personal feedback
Creations, like most things in life, are improvable. Ideas and theories are always evolving into different ideas or more sophisticated ones. Discourse communities is a term that has been debated over the years. Three of those debaters are James Paul Gee, James P. Porter, and John Swales. In this essay I will analyze what each of these writers see as the definition of a discourse community while comparing specific points that each of them have regarding their personal view on the subject. It is also important to keep in mind that these authors published each of their articles within a 3-year period. That is important because Swales was the first of the three to publish his paper, everyone who wrote about discourse communities after him, already
Everyone has a Discourse, whether they are aware of it or not. One might ask, “What is a Discourse”? James Paul Gee’s Literacy, Discourse and Linguistics: Introduction states, “Discourses are ways of being in the world; they are a form of life which integrate words, acts, values, beliefs, attitudes, and social identities as well as gestures, glances, body positions, and clothes” (6-7). Entering the writing Discourse may be difficult, as there are many styles and versions. It is common to come upon many styles of writing such as college level writing, scientific writing and technical/business communication. They all differ yet share a common purpose; to provide information to their audience whether it be to entertain or educate.
English 102 so far has been interesting for an 8:30am class; I did not expect to be so awake for a class so early. Professor Denton makes the class attention grabbing, something few professors I have had, had been able to accomplish well or at all. However, I do not particularly like the portfolio grading style enforced by the English department; it leaves too much in the wind. Professor Denton removes the feeling of not knowing how well you are doing until the very end, by giving us suggestions for revisions and a letter grade to go along with the paper. This is extremely convenient, because it does not leave your paper or your grade up to speculation. So far, we have completed an editorial and evaluation papers. I liked the editorial paper
Part of my literacy experience was about learning an important lesson in a book and how each page carries a story that’s brought to life. At the time, I didn’t learn about learning critical literacy until I was in my English 91 class. In my English 91 class, I was taught how to use critical thinking in my papers. I imagine how much literacy has been involve in my life from childhood till college. The books I’ve read in my childhood is how I ‘ve taught how to write. But, as I look back into my steps of learning literacy it came to mind how difficult writing essays were. The biggest piece of the puzzle is to not be afraid to express my opinions and feelings through writing. Sometimes my teachers would encourage me and suggest how we can express ourselves by free writing. This simple technique helped us to express ourselves and we become open to our feelings through
“Learning to Read and Write” and “Freewriting” both accomplish the act of trying to express freedom of thought. With free expression, people are able to express themselves through writing. Not only does expressing the self through writing empower a person, but it also acts as motivation. Learning new things and trying to express them through writing down thoughts helps individuals understand themselves. Writing is what makes each individual different. Peter Elbow believes that freewriting is the most important tool in a writer’s toolbox. He views writing as a free flow of thoughts and feelings. In my past years of writing I have seen myself develop into a well disciplined and patient writer. However, I have seen myself significantly improve and mature as a writer over the past few months more than I have in the past four years. I view writing as an open doorway full of ideas, feelings, and thoughts weaved together simply for creating a masterpiece. Before entering college English 1010, high school students are conditioned to write required papers and assignments without having the ability to “put you’re your own opinions and feelings in a paper.” Fortuantly,I have been given the opportunity at The University of Memphis to express myself in writing
I selected WRTG 101 because it was a required class towards my undergraduate degree. This is a class that I should have taken earlier in my pursuit of my degree; it would have been extremely beneficial to me with my writing assignments for other classes. Being a student of WRTG 101 employs me to use my critical thinking skills in conjunction to my writing skills. Prior to taking this class, I thought that my writing skills were above average; however this class has provided instruction and feedback that I needed improvement in several areas.
Writing essays and other types of posts has always been difficult for me. But, throughout this composition class, I have learned many interesting and new things about the different types of writing styles. When starting this class, I considered myself to be an average writer with run-of-the-mill vocabulary, ordinary sentence structure and typical finished products. This class has helped me greatly improve my writing skills in a variety of ways. I have learned multiple things by taking this class, such as new ways to approach writing and that there is much that I still need to learn about composition.
My journey in this English 3001 course during the past ten weeks, and over the course of taking is English class I have grown and learned more that I thought it is necessary for me to know as a student. I have improved in my overall writing skills because if you look at my second in-class essay and the rest of my essay you will see that I have made progress and improvement compare to my diagnostic essay and the first in-class essay. Moreover, now that I have completed the English course my skills are better that I am capable to meet the university standard writing requirements.
