As you can clearly see being an American isn 't as it was perceived. However, being an American is a great privilege and living the American lifestyle is very meaningful. Throughout this essay I have learned that being an American contains lots of exemplorific characteristics that go along with it. Just as Philip Gleason explained “To pursue as an American an individual didn 't have to be any particular nationality, language, religion, or ethnic background.” What I have taken from this essay is that Americans have the right to be free and pursue the American Dream with
The First Amendment states our right to freedom of speech, press, religion, and our rights to peacefully assemble. This part of the Bill of Rights alone can set us free. Because people stood up for themselves and others, more amendments discussing freedom have been added to the Bill of Rights. For example, the 19th Amendment
Reed, he defines his own personal interpretation of what is and what is not a true patriot. To Reed an American is someone who is encouraged by the ideals in the Declaration of Independence such as “All men are created equal.” I agree with Reed because my interpretation of an American is someone who follows the rights that our forefathers left us. For example people who know their rights are true Americans because they know that the Government cannot take their rights away from them an example is when someone goes to court they don't have to tell the judge anything if they don't feel like it because the judge cannot make them speak or take their rights. But some people may think different on what an American is and don't know what it really means to be an
The thirty-second President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt in his speech, Pearl Harbor on December 8, 1941, defines the brutal attacks by the Japanese. Roosevelt's purpose is to persuade Americans to join in the war effort and come together as a country. He adopts a resentful, patriotic tone in order to thoroughly bring attention to the recent attack and the course of action this entails. Roosevelt initiates his speech by describing the attack on Pearl Harbor the previous day and acknowledging the everlasting effect it will put on the country. He appeals to the emotional side of the audience using pathos by announcing that “this is a day that will live in infamy” (1) and that the United States was “suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan” (1-2).
In the preamble it also stated “secure the blessing to ourselves and are posterity”. That means it saves our blessings of our hard earned rights and keeps us free and from a tyranny government. This part in the Constitution means to me that the government can not turn into a dictatorship under the Constitution.
That is another big thing too. A good way to show Americanism is to support the people in your school and community. be an American to me, is not about your ethnicity, religion or language you speak. It is about your beliefs and what you add to this country. Being an American also means being free and proud of where you 're from.
What does it mean to be an American? To me an American is being brave and strong. Being an American is loving thy neighbor and respecting each other. Being an American is standing tall and proud during the national anthem or taking a knee. No matter how you decide to use your rights and freedom to express your opinion, being an American is the greatest privilege on planet Earth.
The constitution and the fifteenth amendment were written to promote the American values such as freedom of speech and liberty to vote in a democratic nation. The voting rights should always be guaranteed and requirements to vote should not be complicated. States should also have the right to exercise its sovereignty, but states should not be able to restrict any American citizen the right to vote. This new requirement that states have been implementing prove that racial discrimination has not decreased and the impact in minorities is still relevant. Shelby County V Holder case was extremely important to have a clear understanding of the complexities of American politics and its executive, judicial, and legislative branches.
The true significance of the first clause of the 14th amendment is that any person born on American soil is now protected by the government. They now have the same exact rights as a U.S. citizen and now no state can deny them of life, liberty or property. This is life changing for the freed slaves, they now are protected and will receive full benefits of American citizenship. Also, the fifth clause of the 14th amendment is very significant because it establishes that the congress will enforce all sections in the 14th amendment and stand by everything stated. Furthermore, the states cannot overpass law because we are now protected by government.
It was then, when Lyndon B. Johnson rose and gave ideas on how to fix the current state of the United States, as it so desperately needed. Johnson would become one of the key leaders during the unrest of the United States when African Americans were demanding equal rights as the whites. He used many speeches to help convince the people and the people of congress that this change was needed desperately.
Today, freedom is the cornerstone of what it means to be an American. When asked what they thought it was to be an American, most people would reply with an answer about how, as an American, they had the right to be free. Whether it be the freedom to practice any religion (just like the pilgrims fought for), or it be the freedom to speak freely without fear of an oppressive government. When the pilgrims achieved this freedom, they set forth the idea that an American, at their very core, had the right to be free. Without this value, the landscape of modern society, as well as what it means to be an American, might look very different.
America 's versatility is its greatest strength, but how it is interpreted by its citizens is what causes conflict. As an American citizen, I am able to enjoy the liberties granted to me by the United States Constitution. I am allowed to speak freely and bear arms. However, I am not able to use these liberties to impeach other 's. It is important to remember that there is a relationship between good and evil, and both will continue to be present in our society; and in becoming an effective member of society, I must understand this and consistently acknowledge it in my own life.
While reading Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki and Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, these points are obvious. In Unbroken Louie Zamperini was a bombardier for the Air Corps. His position during the war indirectly placed him in Japan’s hands when his plane crashed in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the
American and Madison views are almost the same as Aristotle’s. A just government must equally protect the unequal facilities of property attainment. Madison’s “Just” law equally protects unequal faculties. Aristotle and Madison agreed that laws should protect the liberty of all and everyone deserves to have their liberties protected. Freedom and justice means that everybody should be free in the race of life.
What it means to be an American is that you have the freedom to vote freedom of speech. You have the liberty to be what you want in America no one chooses for you. Also have the liberty to work wherever you want not be someone 's slave. Being American means you don 't have to hide your religion, the color of your skin or your sex. You have the ability to speak what you want.
