In the book Anthem their society is way different from ours. They are not allowed to be individual or say the word “I”. They can’t have names, instead they are in groups and have group names. They all have a part in society like their jobs and things they do. For example the equality group belong to the street sweepers.
Freedom A collective is defined as a group of individuals. In Anthem, the collective refers to a group of people who have surrendered their individuality completely. The people within the society depicted cannot be, or believe themselves to be, better than their brothers, nor can they think thoughts which are not also shared with all others.

Ayn Rand was born in St. Petersburg, Russia on February 2nd, 1905. She was only twelve years old when the Bolshevik Revolution led to her father’s pharmacy being nationalized and this event birthed her hatred for communism. She then decided she would use her story-writing skills to express her disliking of collectivism and its impact on Russia. Rand later studied at the University of Petrograd, now known as St. Petersburg, where she studied philosophy and graduated in 1924 with highest honors in history. Anthem’s society is dystopian world where all human advancements and technology are absent. Individualism is seen as a sin and is shunned by the citizens. The citizens have been stripped of any solitary rights and only live to serve their brothers around them. Equality was a City Street Sweepers that had always been told that he was different from his brothers; both mentally and physically. Nevertheless, he still worshiped the principles of his world like the people around him.
Anthem is a novel about a man, Equality 7-2521, who has been different from everyone else ever since he was a child. Equality has more ambition than the other people and he also breaks some of the laws. such as using the word "I" and keeping secrets from the council. But, his collectivist society taught him that being different is a sin so, he tries hard to suppress his curiosity and his desire of wanting another job than what the council assigned him. One day, as equality is working , he sees the beautiful Liberty 5-3000 among the peasants.

In today's generation, we have individualism in our society today. Everyone has the right to make their own choices, such as, if one wants an education or not.
