In 2013, budget cuts in a school system of Akron, Ohio caused schools to have to cut their fine arts programs; therefore, over half of the school’s population had no choice but to change their schedule with different courses. To prove that this budget cut was not working to their school board, a small group of students conducted a study with all of the students that were once involved in the fine arts programs before they had been cut. Some of these questions included: “ever since cuts were made, have you begun participating in drugs?” and “has your overall school performance dropped since you have had the arts?” Afterwards, for reassurance that the students in question were not lying, the group asked common core teachers if they had noticed
Mike Rose details the faults of the education system in a piece concerning his own personal experiences. His high school education was radically changed when his school swapped his test scores with the scores of a student with the same last name. The system depended upon test scores to determine the path of classes that individual students must take, and due to the weak performance reflected in Mike Rose’s alleged scores, he was placed on the vocational path. Unfortunately, the vocational path was implied to be the lowest tier of classes in the school - so despite Rose’s natural intelligence, he was placed within remedial classes due to the IQ within his file. The increase of the amount of students attending school was in correlation with employers rejecting dropout students, preventing the uneducated from finding work. Within schools, classes became larger in numbers due to the fact that more students were enrolling with less teachers to educate them. Overall, the Great Depression effected all of society, including education. Returning to the Philip Sheffield High School yearbook, compared to yearbooks to later come, the 1937-1938 yearbook is limited. Waiting for Superman: Film Review Waiting for Superman, “directed” by Davis Guggenheim, is a 2010 documentary, just under two hours, about Guggenheim’s exploration of America’s education system. Throughout his documentary, Guggenheim discovers that America’s education has become unhealthy in many ways. He focuses on five individuals being impacted due to this shattered system, and the process of the lottery. Waiting for Superman exemplifies the effect of poverty on students living in California and New York. These underprivileged kids, who do not have the choice as to what kind of school they attend, have the lowest test scores across the world.
Nobody understood why he wanted to always get the best grades,; he told them about how strict his mom was with his grades and anything below an “A” he felt like a failure. Towards the end of the movie he was able to share his story of why him of all people was in saturday detention. Briain confessed that he was failing shop class;, he only took this class because he believed it would be an easy “A” to boost his gpa. He felt so defeated that he brought a flare gun to school. It shows the disadvantages that many students face in public schools, such as being placed in lower level classes where the students are considered notoriously rude and ignorant by the school administrators. The movie works to disprove the idea of the students being lazy by showing the hard work they put into their notebook and the passion they show when Miss Gruwell teaches them with an attitude that shows she believes they are just as capable of any other students. “Freedom Writers” addresses the problem of the structure of the education system, showing the viewers how the system makes it more likely for certain students to be left behind or left out of academic success. The movie “Freedom Writers” contains fatal flaws in its portrayal of the characters. The content is riddles with racist and classist connotations that reduce the efficacy of the movie’s attempt to seem like a progressive film.
These are cultures that function in opposition to the prevailing social norm. A social norm at Mizzou would be to go to class on time and finish all of your homework. Those groups of students who fail their classes because they don’t care and don’t go to class would be a part of a counterculture. Cultural diversity is how diverse the campus is, and from what ive heard their has been a negative response toward cultural diversity in the form of racism that has been growing as a shadow over mizzou the past few years. The word poverty derives from the Latin word paupertāt, which means moderate circumstances. Such a definition best describes the situation for millions of young American students. Throughout American history, poverty and education have gone hand-in-hand for many students. From getting picked on for how the person is dressed (Carson & Murphy, 2011), to not receiving the proper funding need to create a quality school (Gonzales, 2016), the life of an impoverished student is no joking matter. Although poverty is an enormous barrier for students, society believes that this is no excuse for continuing to live in poverty (Ladd, Noguera, Reville, & Starr, 2016).

The United States of America is supposed to be the “greatest” country in the world but statistics are showing that our government/educational system is failing us; children/young adults of the nation. Being a student of a middle ranked school in Arizona, I personally have had a first-hand feel for how good and/or bad teaching affects students. Just in high school I have had teachers that would just assign websites as our lesson and even teachers that sit at their desk for the whole hour; don’t even go over the mindset, homework, and maybe only show one problem so that we’ll know what the homework will be like. From a young age society teaches us that people like Chris are second-class citizens, and just because they have disability they are therefore inferior both mentally as well as physically. And though it’s not right, a lot of people seem to think that way, including Mike Barbour and Rich Marshall.
