Throughout human history, many different things affected culture and history as a whole. From laws, to inventions, to technological advancements. One thing most people do not consider to be part of this list is drinks. In the book “A History of the World in 6 Glasses” by Tom Standage, six different drinks that heavily affected world history are discussed and analyzed. Beer and wine had an extensive effect on the world, but coffee is, without question, the most influential of the three.
Millions of people begin each day with a cup of coffee. They likely believe that they prepare the drink by brewing grounded coffee beans in water. However, that is not completely accurate; the term coffee bean is a misnomer. The grounded substance was a seed, not a legume. Perhaps in a similar way, mislabeling has happened to gluttony. In her book Glittering Vices, Rebecca DeYoung argues there is more to gluttony than simply overindulging. She wrote, “Gluttony is about taking excessive pleasure in food” (143). In this paper, I will overview DeYoung’s view of gluttony, including her understanding of what constitutes it and highlight its noticeable aspects, such as the glutton’s stomach becoming their demigod. Then, I will give my reflection on the topic. Last, I will argue that DeYoung overlooked egoism and narcissism’s relationship to envy. She argues that the envious are envious for the reason, they do not have self-love (44); however, their narcissism drives their envy for whatever it is they lack.
“Drinking Coffee Elsewhere” by ZZ Packer follows the story of Dina, a young black girl from Baltimore, as she copes with life studying at Yale (117-119). Throughout the story, Dina seems to be a fiercely and independent character that likes to be on her own and away from society. She always speaks her mind, regardless of the consequences, but her independence destroys her because of her lack of introspection. This helps her to give up things that will help her get out of her individualism. Due to this, she pushes away the only friend she has because of her inability to understand herself, and her toxic personality. She wants to keep hurting herself adding more pain to her life. She is clearly an example of someone who is in pain that needs
The intent of this experiment is to understand how hot and cold water interact with each other by combining clear hot water and black ice cold water. I hope to learn more about how hot and cold water interact with each other. As of now, I know that cold water is denser than hot water. Knowing this I formed my hypothesis. Being, if hot and cold water were combined, then the cold water would move beneath the hot water because cold water is denser than hot water.
Coffee vs energy drinks, who will win? People drink coffee and energy drinks because they wake you up and they get you ready for the day. Most energy drinks hold 8.4 ounces. On the other hand, coffee has 8 ounces. On the healthier side, coffee only has 1 calorie for 8 ounces while energy drinks have 110 calories for 8.4 ounces. Usually you find both of these items at Wawa. If you want to drink energy drinks I would go with the brand Red Bull. Coffee has no effect on your heart. Winter was just around the corner. It was my first time in the biggest coffee shop in town. I could see the cheerful and brilliant lighting of the shop as I walked across the vast parking lot. There were tables outside the shop each with a brown vintage style umbrella. This particular coffee shop is not a cafe, it’s a coffee shop literally. They sell the finest coffee from all over the world. It also has a book corner in the left hand side of the shop where we can buy books. They make very good coffee as well. This place is an ideal place for students and employees to release stress. As I made my way through the transparent glass door, a blanket of warm air hit me and the rich aroma of coffee which was delectable. The noise the customers made was immense which reminded me how popular a place this is.
