Romeo and Juliet had such a deep love for each other they would do anything for each other. In Act 2, Scene 3 of William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurence decides that he will marry Romeo and Juliet in secret. However, Friar Laurence’s reason for marrying the two is unjustified. He expects and hopes the rivalry between the Capulets and Montagues will end, which is revealed when he responds to Romeo, “‘In one respect I’ll thy assistant be; / For this alliance may so happy prove / To turn your households’ rancor to pure love.’” (Ⅱ.3.90-92). As expressed in this quote, Friar Laurence has a sudden shift in opinions once he realizes what the results could be from their love.
Friar Laurence was a huge character in the book, but is thought to be the one who killed Romeo and Juliet. The friar was the one who had the idea and the one to marry them. The friar married them to help end the feuds between their families, but it only ended their lives. Romeo and Juliet’s deaths were not just one person’s fault; many people contributed to how they ended up dying. Even though these people did not kill them physically, they are still a part of the reason they died. The person who contributed to this matter but still did not have much effect was the nurse; she talked badly about Romeo, which set off Juliet. The next person who was most at fault but not the most was Tybalt; he caused a scene with Romeo, which started the whole Romeo leaving situation. The person who was most at fault was Friar Lawrence; even though he married them and wanted the best for them, he was still a big part of the reason they died.
One of Friar Laurence’s characteristics is that he is benevolent. Throughout the second act of the play, we get to see that Friar cares deeply about Romeo and is quite literally his “spiritual advisor”. We see that he has Romeo’s best interest in mind multiple times including the following quote, “Be plain, good son, and homely in thy drift. Riddling confession finds but riddling shrift.” This is one place Friar showcases how much he cares for Romeo.
