Romeo and Juliet is probably the most famous love story ever written of all time. A tragic tale showing the forbidden love of two young star-crossed lovers that come from two feuding families. With the term “star-crossed lovers”(Shakespeare.prologue 6) used by Shakespeare with the chorus in the prologue, we know the tragic fate of our two main characters, but by who? The untimely death of Romeo and Juliet was ultimately caused by Friar Lawrence and the long-standing family feud. To start off the long-standing family feud between the Capulet family and the Montague family is undeniably the one most to blame for the tragic deaths of Romeo and Juliet. In the opening line of the play “Two households, both alike in dignity/(In fair Verona, where …show more content…
Friar Lawrence has made many reckless decisions that lead to their tragic demises like when he decided to marry Romeo and Juliet knowing they came from opposing bitter families(Shakespeare.2.6). The Friar's decision to marry them was an act of recklessness and carelessness as he soon found out and came to regret. But perhaps the worst decision Friar Lawrence made was when he went to Juliet to propose a plan after hearing she will be forced to marry Count Paris. Friar Lawrence talks with Juliet and gives her the plan to fake her death before the marriage with Count Paris and he will get Romeo to pick her up from the family tomb and they will both go to live in Mantua together(Shakespeare.4.1). But with no surprise, the incredibly dangerous and risky plan went horribly wrong and took a turn for the worst. Friar Lawrence failed to inform Romeo about the plan which led him to go to Juliet’s body and kill himself. Even after seeing Romeo’s dead body after arriving and Juliet in the tomb alive, he decided to run away and leave Juliet kills herself(Shakespeare.5.3). Frair Lawrence has done a lot of irresponsible and dumb things that has lead to the tragic untimely deaths of Romeo and …show more content…
One example we see of this is when Juliet kills herself by stabbing herself. In the heart. “Yea, noise? Then I’ll be brief. O, happy dagger,/This is thy sheath. There rust, and let me die./She takes Romeo’s dagger, stabs herself, and dies”(Shakespeare.5.3.174-175). As we can see Juliet clearly killed herself with the dagger in her own hands. That clearly shows that she was responsible for her death. Not only that but a bit earlier Romeo, like Juliet, killed himself. “Here’s to my love. Drinking. O true apothecary,/Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die./He dies.”(Shakespeare.5.3.119-120). As we read in the play we can see that Romeo purposely drank the poison he got knowing he would die. That shows that Romeo was responsible for his death like Juliet. Although those are some evidence leading to the fact that Romeo and Juliet are to be blamed for their deaths it is simply just false. Even though they did kill themselves it doesn't mean that they are to blame for their deaths. The long-standing family feud and Friar Lawrence are the ones who are truly responsible for their deaths. The family feud caused them to be scared and secretive about their relationship. And Friar Lawrence, whole tried to fix their problems, but only made everything worse with his risky plans and agreeing to marry Romeo and Juliet. The
Juliet hated the fact that she had to marry someone she didn’t love so she was willing to take a chance on dying in order not to marry him. Friar Lawrence and Romeo should have known better than to try and deceive Juliet and her family. They should have been more aware of the consequences of their actions. In the end, their actions led to tragedy and heartbreak. Juliet was not blameless in the situation, but she was a victim of circumstances created by the two men.
Friar Lawrence is to blame for Romeo and Juliet’s death because he didn’t tell Friar John how important it was to deliver the letter to Romeo. Romeo didn’t know what was happening with Juliet and he thought she was dead. Friar Lawrence doesn’t make it to the Capulet’s Vault on time, so Romeo gets there before him and Friar couldn’t explain things to him and tell him what was happening with Juliet. When Friar got to the Vault, Romeo was already dead. “Romeo!
Juliet, very young and irresponsible, leaving Friar Lawrence's good intentions to lead to the misfortune in Shakespeare’s play. One reason why Friar Lawrence is reliable for the deaths of both Romeo and Juliet is because leading up to
The first way that Friar Lawrence is the reason for Romeo and Juliet's death is that he married them. In the quote shown Friar Lawrence is agreeing to marry Romeo and Juliet. “In one respect ill thy assistant be;/ For this alliance may so happy
For example, in Act 2, Scene 3, he says “For this alliance may so happy prove… To turn your households’ rancour to pure love.” Friar Lawrence is happy that he was able to make Romeo and Juliet’s marriage official and in doing so, thought that the feud between the Montagues and Capulets would be over. However, he never considered the consequences that could ensue from marrying the two. Friar Lawrence’s plan to marry Romeo and Juliet was very foolish because it just made the situation worse.
The average everyday person fails to plan out many things throughout their life, but not many of them cost someone's life. But in Friar Lawrence’s case that is exactly what happened. Friar Laurence is one of the main characters in the play, Romeo and Juliet. After all, he is the one who marries them, but that does mean he was helpful. He created many problems for Romeo and Juliet.
Some might say that in “Romeo and Juliet” Friar Lawrence was at fault for their death because he was the one to come up with the plan. He gave Juliet the idea to fake her death so Romeo can come and get her once she wakes up…(citation). Friar Lawrence was forced to come up with an idea. Juliet threatened to kill herself in his cell and he didn’t want that. He married Romeo and Juliet to bring peace to the capulets and montagues.
In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Friar Lawrence is the most responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet with his poor judgment and planning, marrying a young couple who knew each other for only a couple hours, providing Juliet with a dangerous potion, and failing to notify Romeo of the dangerous plan putting him in danger. First, Friar Lawrence agrees to marry a couple with the knowledge that they have only known each other for a couple hours when he says, “In one respect I’ll thy assistant be; For this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households’ rancor to pure love” (II.III.90-92). Friar Lawrence agrees to marry the two believing it will help the feud between the two families. This is a rather poor decision on his part
After Romeo kills Tybalt he says “oh I am fortunes fool”(3.1.136). All the decisions that Friar Lawrence has made ultimately caught up to him, and he knows that he has made a grave mistake. The second that Friar Lawrence married them his fate was set up, if the Friar had just said no all of this would have never happened. Friar Lawrence said “These violent delights have violent ends / And in their triumph die, like fire and powder, / Which as they kiss consume” (2.6.9-11).
A question that we have been all trying to answer is, who caused the deaths of Romeo and Juliet? Well, I believe that Friar Lawrence, the parents of Juliet( capulet and lady capulet), and the family feud in general caused the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Friar Lawrence is one of the causes of Romeo and Juliet's death. Friar Lawrence can be considered as wise, trustworthy, caring, and well-intentioned.
Friar Lawrence was the one to blame throughout the entire story. Although Friar Lawrence was just trying to help throughout the whole story, he was just causing problems that led to Romeo and Juliets death. The one problem was just miscommunication between Friar Lawrence, Friar John, and Romeo. “Who bar my letter, then, to Romeo?”(S.S, pg. 470).
Romeo and Juliet both died by suicide but it is not Romeo’s or Juliet’s fault for both of their death. The death of both was their fate which is mentioned in the chorus. Romeo and Juliet’s deaths can still be blamed on other characters. Especially Friar Laurence, who tried to help Romeo and Juliet but failed in the end.
There are several people that could be blamed for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet however, Friar Lawrence is the one who is truly to blame for Romeo and Juliet's deaths. He is most to blame out of all people for many obvious reasons. Friar Lawrence is most responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because he was the one who married the two lovers even though they weren't suppose to be married, gave Juliet this deadly potion, and he feels so guilty at the end which means he knows he's to blame. Friar Laurence was the wise adviser to Romeo and Juliet. He kept their secret and helped them be together.
He married Romeo and Juliet in secret without permission from the Capulets and Montagues. Although he may have believed that the marriage would bring peace between the two families, Friar Lawrence should have recognized that it was a risky decision. Another significant mistake that was made by Friar Lawrence was when he gave Juliet the potion without discussing the plan with the two lovers. Friar Lawrence should have talked to Juliet and Romeo together if he thought it was necessary to take this matter of action. Once again, this decision was both risky and not well thought out.
He also helped Juliette avoid marrying Paris, and finally, he failed to tell Romeo that Juliet faked his death. This is one of the reasons why he was responsible for their death. Besides marrying them, why should Friar Lawrence be responsible for their death? The first reason is that he married Romeo and Juliet when he wasn’t supposed to. In act 2 scene 6 of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Brother Lawrence says: "These violent delights have violent ends".
