A tragedy is an event that causes great suffering, destruction and distress. It is a dramatic genre that is represented in plays. ‘Romeo & Juliet’ is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare. The responsibility for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet rests on the shoulders of Friar Lawrence. The choice he makes about the marriage, the advice he gives to Juliet and the plan he creates for the two “star-cross’d lovers” (Rom. 1.Prologue.6) force both lovers to commit regrettable mistakes that lead them to their death. (Rom. 4.1.105-117) Accordingly, Friar Lawrence explains to Juliet exactly what is to happen while she is ‘dead’ and what will happen when she awakes. Friar Lawrence is responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Therefore Friar Lawrence’s advice to Juliet is a contributing factor to Romeo and Juliet’s death. Friar Lawrence creates a plan for the two “star-cross’d lovers” (Rom. 1.Prologue.6), however it does not turn out as he expected. Friar Lawrence plans to have a letter sent to Romeo regarding Juliet’s fake death and the entire scheme behind it. However the letter does not get delivered to Romeo. Friar Lawrence says that he will send the letter he wrote for Romeo to Mantua, “... I’ll send a friar with speed / To Mantua, with my letters to thy lord.” (Rom. 4.1.123-124). Accordingly Friar Lawrence plans to send the letter to Romeo by getting another friar to deliver it. Friar Lawrence’s plan failure is the partial cause of the deaths of Romeo and Juliet.
