Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare ends with the death of Romeo and Juliet. There were many causes for their deaths and many people contributed to it. But Friar Lawrence was the largest factor in this story. Friar Lawrence is to blame for Romeo and Juliet’s deaths. Friar Lawrence, a holy man. Who would have thought it was him who caused it all. Friar Lawrence not only agreed to marry them, but followed through with is and actually married them. Montagues do not get along with Capulets. It was a disaster waiting to happen. Friar was only trying to bind the two families together and out of their feud, but honestly, he did not consider the risk factors. Friar Lawrence also gave Juliet the potion that did not kill her, but clearly played a key role in both the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. When she took the potion, she was out cold, no heartbeat or anything. Good potion, it worked and she woke up later. But Romeo actually thought Juliet was dead. So he wanted to kill himself and he did. Only because Friar Lawrence gave Juliet that potion. Friar Lawrence also failed to get the plan to Romeo and that caused Romeo to emotionally breakdown. Tybalt was a ruthless beast who got angry at Romeo for showing up at a Capulet party. So he challenged Romeo to a duel. If Tybalt had never challenged Romeo, Romeo would not be banished. Tybalt killed Mercutio because Mercutio was standing up for Romeo. Tybalt slayed him and Romeo backlashed by killing Tybalt, causing Romeo to be banished. But even if Tybalt had not of gotten Romeo banished, the relationship between Romeo and Juliet would have been revealed. Friar Lawrence would try to help Romeo and cause somebody else to find out. Juliet came up with a plan to fake her death to complete her plan she needed a potion. She went to Friar Lawrence to get the potion; Friar Lawrence shouldn’t of given Juliet the potion understanding the future consequences of helping Juliet fake her death. As a result of Juliet faking her death there were repercussions romeo didn’t know that Juliet’s death was a hoax and the trauma of her death resulted in Romeo going to the apothecary to get poison.

First, Friar Lawrence is the one to blame for the tragic ending because he married Romeo and Juliet in hopes that it would end the family's feud. If Friar Lawrence had never married the lovers then most of the events leading up to the ending would have never happened. Friar Lawrence married the two of them when they were too young to get married and he did not do his job as being a good role model for the young lovers. He didn’t hesitate to marry the lovers or even try to talk to them about the decision they were making. He should have told the parents about the secret marriage because both of the lovers were still minors.
Although Romeo was peaceful, Tybalt showed no mercy, and eventually Mercutio stepped in and got killed by Tybalt. Tybalt is a troublesome boy (119). He always pushes things and this time he pushes them too far. On page (121) Tybalt "scratches" Mercutio. If Tybalt learns enough is enough Mercutio's death could be prevented. Romeo, filled with anger, calls for Tybalt and takes on his revenge (123-125).
Friar Lawrence was the one to blame throughout the entire story. Although Friar Lawrence was just trying to help throughout the whole story, he was just causing problems that led to Romeo and Juliets death. The one problem was just miscommunication between Friar Lawrence, Friar John, and Romeo. “Who bar my letter, then, to Romeo?”(S.S, pg. 470).
Friar Lawrence should have done anything possible in order to bring Juliet out of the crypt. However, all he did was leave the crypt and let Juliet kill herself so that he could leave the scene and wouldn't be the one to blame. Even the prince in the final scene of the play says, "We still have known thee for a holy man". Friar Lawrence is completely oblivious to the long family feud that rests between the Capulets and Montagues. He takes no precaution of what the outcome of the marriage could be, and he takes action before thinking in this case. In the prologue, “Doth with their death bury their parents’ strife”, (Prologue.8) this shows how the marriage stirs things up and makes everything worse. Friar Lawrence says, “...in one respect thy I’ll assistant for this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households rancor to pure love.” (2.3.91-99)
The tale of Romeo and Juliet ends with the death of the two lovers. But there is a reason behind their passing. Friar Lawrence, a priest in Verona, had a big part of the play, and may be the reason for Romeo and Juliet to lay still forever in their graves. The friar was the one that devised the plan to fake Juliet’s death, but ran away in cowardice when he was afraid.
