Furthermore, his plan to fake Juliet's death was reckless and ultimately led to the tragic end of both Romeo and Juliet. Friar Laurence's misguided actions went even further beyond hastily agreeing to Romeo and Juliet's marriage and faking Juliet's death. He seem happy about keeping lies from those he was supposed to guide. To maintain the facade of the marriage is valid, he instructed Juliet to drink a sleeping potion that would make her appear dead for 42 hours, essentially deceiving her family and the rest of the community. Friar Lawrence first comes to know of the couple through the hot headed Romeo. Friar Lawrence, being a citizen Verona, knows too well of the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets. The Friar sees Romeo's feelings for Juliet as a possible way to end the feud. While this is righteous thing to do, and would indeed benefit all parties, Friar Lawrence does show to be a bit self interested at times. His hasty and radical methods, including having Juliet play dead, are done so as opposed to more conservative methods all in the hopes of ending the feud and the possible rewards to his reputation and his spiritual afterlife.

In Act 2, Scene 6, Friar Laurence says to Romeo, “Come, Come with me, and we will make short work. For, by our leaves, you shall not stay alone till holy church incorporate two in one.” Friar Laurence also tells Romeo, “These violent delights have violent ends and in their triumph die, like fire and power, which, as they kiss, consume.” This proves Friar Laurence is at fault because he married them knowing the Montagues and Capulets had a rivalry that would cause a problem in their marriage.
