High Schools in America seem to specialize in one thing, either sports or academics. In the book Friday Night Lights, H.G. Bissinger argues that Permian High School excels in and only cares about football. On the other hand, Mt. Vernon High School focuses and excells in academics. While there are noticible differences between the schools, who is better at what isn’t the issue at hand. The issue is high schools in America and what many of them aren’t doing. They are supposed to prepare the children of our country for the future, not specialize in one thing. Schools should be well-rounded in all areas of student interest and necessary life skills.
Friday Night Lights is a book about the students and traditions of a large Texas Town, Odessa, which focuses on Permian High School. The book may as well be a football book. While Bissinger tells the story of students and people living in the town and attending the school, the story

There is nothing bigger in this town than Permian high school football. There are a number of examples throughout the book demonstrating the popularity of football. However, one which really stands out is an event the author calls the Watermelon Feed. Whether anyone eats watermelon or not we don’t know, but what we do know is the school revolves their academic schedule around this event. It seems as if the entire town is invited to fill the gym in order to reminisce about the past successes of Permian football and welcome in the new team. Current and new players are introduced one by one, their name and position called followed by the roar of probably more than 1,000 fans, all of whom are wondering which players will provide the winning combination for this year’s season. This chapter highlights the entire towns enthusiasm for the most important aspect of Odessa, High School
This chapter describes the beginning of Luma’s life in Decatur Georgia. Luma finds a job waiting on tables, and eventually start looking for a job as a soccer coach. She found a job coaching an all girls soccer team at Decatur-Dekalb YMCA. Luma’s practice routines were strict and many of her players ' ' and their mothers complained and or left. However the players who were insistent on staying had seen an elevation in the team’s performance.
A simple chant that the Gibson Southern football players shout right before heading on to the field. Every last player yells it at the top of their lungs and excites them for the game before them. Why would the players be so excited just by a few words about their school pride? Well, those few words hold a great meaning behind them to the players. It reminds everyone of the years spent together on the practice field, in the weight room, giving it a 100% to play for each other on the football field.
Friday Night Lights, by H.G. Bissinger, follows the Permian Panthers, a successful high school football team in Texas, while they do everything in their power to win the state championship. Near the beginning of the book, we learn about the star running back on the Panthers, Boobie Miles, and how he has college coaches all over the state who are offering him scholarships to come and play for them. Unfortunately for both Boobie and Permian, Miles injures his knee before the season even starts which forces the team to fall back on the second string running back. Boobie’s knee injury was not the only thing that bothered him, he deals with a lot of racial discrimination also. “The black population in Odessa was quite small- about 5 percent” (102).
The story talks about the kid in school, in which we can imagine us going to kindergarten in our early childhood. We used to hate going to the school and
In the first act of the podcast, an adolescent from the Englewood neighborhood advises participating in school to be able to stay away from home. This shows the importance of how a school can serve as a safe place for a multitude of students. This sense of security allows students at the school to have a sense of normalcy and allows them to experience regular teenage opportunities. Furthermore, the high school being a secure place grants the students of Harper High School to receive an education that allows them to develop their identities and interests. The school is a convenient resource, which is seen in Devonte’s case as he gains the benefit of counseling offered by the school.
I read the book, Friday Night Lights, which was published in 1990, and watched the movie, Friday Night Lights, which came out in 2004. The book was written by Buzz Bissinger. The character that I will be comparing and contrasting is Boobie Miles. The scene that I will be comparing and contrasting is the final game. The book and movie are similar in a few ways but are different in many ways.
The Unexpected That Changed My Life for the Better Friday Night Lights not only refers to the stadium that football players play in, but it also refers to every Friday night in September through November. That simple phrase brings back several memories, that carry emotional weight. Memories that are exciting, awe-inspiring, and even painful, and frustrating. The poem “Friday Night Lights” by Gerald Locklin summarizes some of the emotions that come with playing a sport, and brings about a deeper thought process. Being a part of a sport becomes your life, it teaches life lessons, helps build your personality, and shows you passions you never would have dreamed of.
Subculture of College Football “Isn’t there supposed to be a storm coming?” I asked my mom as were getting dressed for a college football game. “Yes, Uncle Mickey said get dressed anyway” “Don’t the storms get bad in this part of the country?” I asked “Yes JaKyrah, now stop asking so many questions” my mom replied, wolling her eyes. This is the moment I realized… they may take this game a bit too far.
Football is a very popular sport not only in American high schools and colleges, but also in the entire country of the United States. Is playing high school football worth the risk and harm inflicted to high school football players? This is the main question raised by the author, Raymond Schroth, in the article “Abolish High School Football.” In this article, Schroth talked about the disadvantages and harms of playing high school football to the players. Schroth argued that high school football should be abolished because it had contributed more harmful effects than benefits to football players.
Many people think that most American schools are satisfactory. That is far from what is actually happening. The harsh reality is that schools that are unsatisfactory do exist. In Jonathan Kozol’s “Fremont High School”, he points out the flaws of a high school located somewhere in Los Angeles. This helps shine light on differences in the quality of education in various areas of the country.
In her narrative essay “The Sanctuary of School,” Lynda Barry recounts a story from her childhood that illustrates her relationships at school vs her relationships at home. She tells us how public school was her sanctuary from her unstable home life. It was a stable environment that she depended on. She tells us this when she says ,"[F]or the next six hours I was going to enjoy a thoroughly secure, warm and stable world." Unlike at home, her school was a place she was noticed and cared about.
Green Lights by Matthew McConaughey I. Meta-thesis and Support Matthew McConaughey´s memoir, Green Lights, refers to the moments in life when things fall into place and everything seems to align–otherwise known as greenlights–and stresses that every moment in life has a purpose and shapes you into who you are today. II. Text Excerpts McConaughey's interpretation of ¨green lights¨ is that they are metaphorical signals that indicate the right time to take a risk or move forward with a project. ¨Green lights aren't always obvious.
Bissinger emphasizes this point to persuade the readers to understand how detrimental pouring large amounts of money and energy towards the high school football team severely impact the future of all the students in Permian High. The small pond these children are living in disrupts their academic success, and the adults fail to recognize this notion. A teacher of thirty-one years, Jane Franks explains that they are now “deadened to themselves and to the world around them” because of their constant lack of effort in class (133). Bissinger includes her views on the effects of the obsession with football, and how the football players are encouraged to only focus on the sport. Franks describes them as ‘deadened’ to the outside world, further examining how unprepared these young adults are for the real world.
There was a great deal of balance in this school. Then Mr. Clark had quit and the whole school and everyone in it went downhill. A lot of the students within the school were dealing drugs as well as doing drugs, and a lot of people within the school have also started forgetting about their education and saw school as merely a place to
