Friendship and Betrayal in The Kite Runner
Martin Luther King Jr., once said “In the end we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” The trust a person has may be paramount in his/her relationships, which if broken leaves the person shattered, doubtful and insecure in all aspects of life. As the saying goes, “The saddest thing about betrayal is that it never comes from our enemies, it comes from friends and loved ones “(Unknown) .Khaled Hosseini demonstrates friendship and betrayal throughout the novel. It portrays how Hassan always showed his friendship and loyalty towards Amir and how he betrayed him. It also shows how Baba betrayed Ali.
Amir and Hassan grew up together and were very close friends. They played with each other, spent time together, and most importantly Hassan treated him like a brother. He is so loyal to Amir that he would protect him and defend him by all means, even eat dirt if Amir asked him to. He protected Amir from Assef by threatening him with his slingshot and still Amir betrayed him after the kite flying tournament when Hassan was getting raped. This shows how Amir was a coward and Hassan was so loyal.
One day when Amir and Hassan were sitting under a mulberry tree, Hassan knew that a kite was going to land there. Amir got very jealous and angry because of him and decided to toy with him. Amir asked Hassan if he would eat dirt if he told him to.
“[Amir] could step into that alley, stand up for Hassan-the way [Hassan] stood up for [Amir] all those times in the past and accept whatever would happen to [Amir].” (Hosseini 77). Hassan would always stand up for his friend Amir in the past. “[Amir] had one last chance to make a decision. One final opportunity to decide who [Amir] was going to be.”
He did not allow Hassan to live in his house, but still never forgot his birthdays and paid for his cleft lip surgery. Though as the years went on, he was more cold to Amir, seeming distant from him and actively stating his disappointment in him. He went as far as to say “I wasn’t like that, I wasn’t like that at all, and neither were any of the kids I grew up with” and he notes that “There’s something
The author provides the reader with mixed feeling about Amir. In his childhood in Kabul Amir comes off as heartless person. He is this because he has done evil stuff in his life. In the beginning of the story something bad happens to Hassan, Amir says,¨In the end, I ran.
He can not bear the scrutiny so he humiliates hassan in public by not defending him or protecting him and he humiliates him when they 2 are alone by telling petty lies to him. But the ironic thing is that the very shame he tries to avoid, becomes a worse self loathing shame latter from all his guilt. However, eventually Amir finds himself in a situation where a sense of family, redemption and belonging comes over him and is able to push his instinctual self preservation tendencies away and pay his respects to Hassan by defending and protecting his child. Coincidentally, where Amir prefered to be accepted, Hassan was never given
Guilt is an emotion that comes from believing one was responsible for a particular mistake whether the assessment was accurate or not. (Powell)It can be described as “a bothered conscience” or “a feeling of culpability for offences”. One feels guilty when there is a feeling of responsibility for an action one regrets. (Barker, Guilt and Shame).A wrongdoer must deal with guilt by making atonement- by making reparation and penance. How a person deals with guilt long term is what really affects their future.
Amir risked his life for Sohrab, Hassan’s son, to repay the wrong he commits toward Hassan. The recurring theme of sacrifice for the ones you love is presented all throughout the novel through Hassan, Baba, and Amir. Hassan and Amir are divided by economic differences throughout their childhood.
In reality, everyone possesses a certain degree of cruelty. It is this aspect of human nature that Khaled Hosseini explores in The Kite Runner. Hosseini vividly depicts the cruelty of human nature by using anecdotes of Amir and Hassan’s childhood and by describing a Taliban-led Afghanistan. Both instances, despite the difference in magnitude, illustrate how cruelty can affect individuals and the society as a whole. Hosseini employs cruelty to serve as both a motivator as well as source of guilt for the protagonist, Amir.

Also, he shows he is loyal to Sohrab at the end of the book when he runs the kite for him. As he runs away to catch it, he yells “For you a thousand times over,”(371).
