The Outsiders: Friendship The Outsiders is a coming-of-age novel written by S. E. Hinton. The story is told in a first-person narrative by Ponyboy Curtis, the protagonist. It tells of how Ponyboy and his gang called “The Greasers” went through a tough period of conflict with “The Socs” which is short for socials. The book has been fairly controversial and has been banned from some schools and libraries because of its portrayal of gang violence, underage smoking/drinking, and family dysfunction.
If a family member isn't loyal, are they truly family? In the book The Outsiders by S. E Hinton, the protagonist is a young boy called Ponyboy, a greaser who stands out from his gang and desires the rival group, the Socs, to get along with the Greasers. In a fight, a Soc ends up getting killed forcing Ponyboy to flee with his gang member, Johnny. Their hideout burns to the ground, and as result, Johnny gets hurt.
How far would you go for a friend? In The Outsiders Johnny and Ponyboy have one of the strongest friendships. In S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, Ponyboy and Johnny value their friendship. They do this by helping each other and having each other’s back. An example of this is when Johnny saves Ponyboy from drowning.
This is illustrated when she leaves and says "if i see you in the hall at school or someplace and dont say hi, it's not personal, or anything." The hesitant tone displays that she is willing to communicate with Ponyboy but because she is a soc, she is restricted from communicating. Therefore, it is clear how relationships can build up their identity, but it can also restrict particular interactions with
Darry then decided to step up and “come of age” to try to be a father like figure for Ponyboy. Ponyboy doesn’t seem to think that Darry cares for him because of the way Darry treats Ponyboy so Ponyboy turns to Sodapop more, “Sodapop is different from anybody; he understands everything...almost. Like he 's never hollering at me all the time the way Darry is, treating me like I’m six instead of fourteen,” (#2). This shows that Ponyboy is annoyed of Darry 's strict father-like figure because Darry is always telling Ponyboy what to do instead of being their for him. But Darry’s strict Father-like figure isn 't so bad, it did do some good…..
Friendship Baltasar Gracian, a well known philosopher, once said “Friendship multiplies the good of life and divides the evil.” His quote is true in The Outsiders by S.E. Hilton. In the book, a group known as the Greasers are known as hoodlums by the Socials, or rich people, and they don’t have a lot of money. What Ponyboy and his gang do have is friendship. Friendship highlights the best parts of this novel.
This novel by S.E Hinton, The Outsiders shows a crucial point that everybody is special in some way and should be known as who they are individuality not as a group. The Outsiders is a book that describes 2 gangs , the luxurious Socs, and the hoodlum Greasers. While they have conflicts with each other, the protaganist, Ponyboy, finds his identity outside of the gang. The important message of the story is that everyone has a unique personality that are developed by being in a group of people away from home, this identity can shape anyone’s way of life and the path they may take in the future. First of all, Socs and greasers have a trademark that showed who was part of their gang, Socs are know for Mustangs, Madras, and leather jackets;
It is about how a gang of low-income teens, the Greasers, conflicts with another gang of wealthy teens, the Socs. By being loyal to each other, the Greasers have overcome most of the challenges that the Socs have proposed. This is why the major theme of The Outsiders is that loyalty is essential for a group’s survival and well-being. One way that loyalty is demonstrated in the novel is how the characters grouped together to protect one another from physical threats. An example of this is when Ponyboy was mugged and beat up by the Socs at the beginning the book.
Soda now wants his brothers to stop the fighting, so they can all live happy with each other, and so he doesn’t hear them fighting everyday. What happened to Soda during the time of this book was awful with Ponyboy running away, and Sandy breaking up with him Soda has been through the ringer. Now he can rise past this and change in a positive way, telling his brothers that things have to change and they have to take his feelings into consideration. Telling them that they have to see him and see that he is hurting, and recodnize that. Now that Soda can rise past his brothers and their fighting, he can still be the glue in the relationship
In the book The Outsiders,by S.E Hinton I believe there are many great examples of friendship especially inside the gang of greasers. There were many good examples of friendship in this great book but in the end I choose to pick the friendship between Johnny and Ponyboy. Throughout this novel Ponyboy and Johnny stick with each other until the end. Throughout the novel there are numerous examples of how Ponyboy and Johnny help each other out and show why they are great friends. As I said in the introduction paragraph there are many examples of friendship throughout the novel with Johnny and Ponyboy.
After returning from their hiding spot Johnny dies in the hospital. All these characters in the novel each identify themselves in different ways and might be influenced by their social groups or realize that they are not like the rest of their friends. The way someone individually identifies or acts tells a lot about them. For example, Johnny shows that although he doesn’t have a great life, he still cares about it and also his friends lives when he kills Bob, in order to defend himself. Or how when Cherry, a Soc, says that she will not be able to say hello to Pony ever again because she cares about her reputation and how other Socs see her.
Brotherly love is strong and unconditional, even if you are oblivious of it, as Ponyboy Curtis learns in The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Ponyboy and his brother Darry have an interesting relationship because of the situation they are in with Darry having to play the role of the parent, and three ways that Ponyboy describes his relationship with his brother in The Outsiders is kill, firm, and care. Ponyboy feels that Darry puts a lot of pressure on him to not get into trouble in school or on the streets. In this novel, Ponyboy mentions, “Darry would kill me if I got into trouble with the police.” (1).
To begin, the setting has a large affect on the characters in The Outsiders. For example, Ponyboy a 14 year old boy greaser who is high-strung most of the time, always looking around cautiously when he is walking alone. “I was sweating something fierce, although I was cold. I could feel my palms getting clammy and the perspiration running down my back. I get like that when I’m real scared”(Hinton 4).
Their parents died earlier in the year. As a result of this, Darry, the oldest, works two jobs in order to take care of his two younger brothers, and though Darry and Ponyboy have a strong relationship as brothers, their relationship has ups and downs. Darry is trying to take care of his brothers and do what is best for them. Sometimes, though, he pushes Ponyboy too hard, which Soda constantly has to remind him of “...when Darry hollers at you, he don’t mean nothin’.” (Hinton, 17) Soda is trying to remind Pony that Darry doesn’t mean all of the things he says when he is angry, and that he only yells because he is concerned about how Ponyboy acts.
In the novel, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton there are two rival groups: the Greasers and the Socs. The Greasers are the poor kids from the east-side and the Socs are the rich kids from the west-side.(c.1,p.2) The book talks a lot about the different relationships between characters. Ponyboy Curtis and Darrel Curtis (also known as Pony and Darry) are brothers. Darry is Pony’s oldest brother.
