Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Malaysia (MOTAC)
Ministry of Tourism and Cultural is a ministry that responsible for the whole activities of tourism in Malaysia including cultural, arts, tourism activities and heritage. Basically, Department of Tourism was first set up in 1959 under the Ministry of Trade of Malaysia. In 2nd Malaysia Plan (1971-1975), government had started to emphasize the role of tourism in the economy whereby the principal objectives of tourism had been discussed in the parliament. In 1980s, Malaysia’s government had found out the importance of tourism activities to our country as it generates income for our nation. Therefore, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism had been established in 1987. On 20th May 1992, Ministry of Culture and Tourism was renamed as Ministry Of Culture, Arts and Tourism (MoCAT).
In 2004, government is very serious in promoting tourism as one of the key major income earners for our nation especially after the signed the agreement of promoting Southeast Asia to the whole world through Asean. In conjunction with it, Ministry of Tourism (MoTour) had been renamed in April 2004 which was responsible solely for tourism matters. On 15th May 2013, MoTour was transformed to Ministry of Tourism and Culture (MOTAC) after the 13th General Election of Malaysia. This transformation of ministry is to serve the close connection between culture and tourism in efforts to promote Malaysia as one of the top destination among the tourists in the world
