The main purpose of Blackfish is to answer why a captured whale would become so aggressive and turn on its trainers. To answer this Cowperthwaite frames the documentary around Tilikum by interviewing experts in the field such as Lori Marino (Director of Science with Non-human Rights Program), and former SeaWorld trainers, such as John Hardgrove who recall capturing young orca 's, like Tilikum, away from their families and placing them into solitary confinement. One of the most emotionally gripping parts of the film is a heartbreaking
In 2013, the documentary called Blackfish was released, a story about a killer whale that over the years at SeaWorld killed several people. It highlighted some of the major problems with animals in captivity. SeaWorld, known for having several different animal attractions; Dolphin Cove, Dolphin Nursery, Orca Underwater Viewing, Shark Encounter, Wild Arctic (Habitat) and many more. The organization first started with the intention of learning more about animals in order to educate the public about different behaviors of each animal. Trainers at Seaworld are offered the opportunity to get hands-on training with animals and are eventually are allowed to entertain the public with the skills they have acquired.
When orcas began getting captured the wild the pods began to catch on. In the documentary Blackfish an Orca researcher named Howard Garrett described how the whales tried to prevent their young from being captured. The adults without young whales would go east and the orcas with the young would go north, in hopes of outsmarting the captors. However, the orca hunters caught on and followed the orcas
On many occasions, as the whale slowed from exhaustion, the whalers would cut the muscles in the back of its neck to exhaust it further and prevent it from being able to lift its head up. When the whale was finally put out of its horrendous misery, the creature was tied to the ship and pumped with air so its carcass wouldn’t start to sink. While attached to the ship, the crew would begin to cut into the leviathan, taking blubber, bone, and meat. When the deed was done, they would cut the ropes and leave the corpse floating in the middle of a now blood-red ocean (Murphy 152-153). Materials harvested from the slaughtered whales were kept in massive compartments in the lowest section of a whaling vessel and ships would not return to port until those compartments were filled entirely with the precious, lucrative
Mass dolphin murder is one of the many issues that are happening in our world today in the 21st century. The Documentary Called “The Cove” would make the viewers open their eyes of what this world actually is and the secret Taiji, Japan is trying to keep. This situation would show us why these activists struggle so hard to stop this social issue. One of the reasons being, the mass murder by the fishermen, and the captivity of the dolphins by the Sea World’s organization. Dolphin meat is sold illegally and people are buying it, unaware of the health risks.
Freeing Willy: A Rhetorical Analysis on Blackfish the Documentary The documentary film Blackfish, by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, is a daring venture, which claims that orcas in captivity become dangerous to human beings, as well as to other orcas. Cowperthwaite points to SeaWorld, in particular, since this world-renowned tourist attraction has had many examples that support her claim. In producing this film, Cowperthwaite hopes to bring about an end to SeaWorld’s practice of using killer whales as performance animals since the limited environment is ultimately doing more harm than good for both the whales and their trainers. The purpose of this rhetorical analysis will be to determine whether Blackfish offers a compelling argument. To begin with,
An article on whaling by Photovoices states, “Many paledang (whaling boats) have been sunk by injured whales trying to escape the harpoon. In some cases, the whale has even crashed its head into the hull of the boat, smashing it to splinters and causing it to sink with the terrified whalers struggling for their lives on the open sea”. This quote shows the dangers of whaling because it is common for men to be injured at sea. Whales are enormous creatures whos instinct is to fight for their lives if they are in danger, leading them to cause destruction on ships and kill the men who hunt them. Once the whale is dead, the task of bringing the whale towards the ship is even harder.
I believe keeping orcas in captivities is not humane .To keep orcas in a zoo for display is acceptable, but it is morally unacceptable to use them for entertainment at SeaWorld. I saw the film Blackfish and now, I resent SeaWorld. They care more about profit than animal welfare. Keeping these sentient animals in captivity for an extended period of time causes them severe psychological damage, as evidenced by several killer whale attacks on trainers. SeaWorld Entertainment has had a rough year in the wake of Blackfish, the explosive 2013 documentary about its killer whales, most notably Tilikum, a 12,500-pound male who has fatally attacked two trainers.
(Blackfish). Killer whales in the wild are aggressive towards each other just as they are to humans, in 1989 an accident involving two whales: Kandu and Corky resulted in Kandu bleeding to death. (Kirby 2) this would have never happened if the whales had the enough space they needed to separate from each other. Contrastingly, killer whales in the wild are more peaceful toward each other and humans. There is only one accident of an orca biting someone in the wild.
Orcas with different backgrounds and dialects are placed together without much thought about how this could affect them. A killer whale named Tilikum was placed in Sealand and he was expected to perform tricks that he had never done, and if he performed them incorrectly all of the whales were withheld food. “This annoyed the others, so they would rake him with their teeth, causing him to bleed” (Lewis). In the wild, when a dominant orca begins showing aggression the other orca has thousands of miles to swim away and flee the scene. However, these animals are in pools where they do not have that option.
