Gaelic Games Assignment – Jessica Quirke Tá an stair Chumann Lúthchleas Gael Gaelacha The initials GAA stand for the Gaelic Athletic Association this is Ireland’s largest sporting organisation at the moment. I can see how this is the case as thousands of people around the county from the young age of 5 up to 55 are getting involved with this association. GAA is celebrated as one of the great amateur sporting associations in the world. It is also part of the Irish consciousness and plays a huge influential role in Irish society today that extends way beyond the basic aim of trying to promote Gaelic games GAA was founded on November 1st 1884 at a meeting in Thurles, Co. The GAA Association also promotes Irish music, song and dance and the Irish language as an integral part of its objectives. The GAA has stayed as an amateur Association since it was founded. In fact Players, even at the highest level, do not get any payment for playing and the volunteer ethos remains one of the most important aspects of the GAA as it highlights the importance of playing the game for the real enjoyment and adrenaline rather than playing professional as some sports like soccer do and sometimes only play for the cash. This aspect of the GAA inspires people from all over the world to take up a Gaeilc game and incorporate it in to their lives The organisation is based around the traditional parish and county structures of Ireland. As a community-based organisation, it is often seen stated that it is difficult to determine where the community ends and the GAA club starts, as the two are so often intertwined.
