What makes the Galapagos unique? Most people will point to the animals, plants or other environmental aspects of the islands. No matter what way you put it, what makes the Galapagos special is in danger. The Galapagos Islands are not separate from problems which are affecting the rest of the world, especially other eco-tourism hotspots. If issues such as population growth, construction and tourism are not addressed soon we will lose the paradise that is the Galapagos to human development and tourism. I am not going to say that everything is going wrong in the Galapagos. When I visited the islands this summer I saw that attempts were being made to protect the islands. When tourists come they are shocked to see that there are towns on the islands. The streets are not lined with sea lions but souvenir shops, tour agencies, and cafes. Tourism has also been on the rise. Even though when we visit the Galapagos our only wish is to enjoy and learn from visiting the small paradise, we bring a lot of problems with us accidentally. Insects, plants, and animals travel with us. Even with the great effort which has been put into stoping the spread of animals and plants from the tourists by the Galapaganean government, not all of the invaders can be stopped, and this problem is only exacerbated with the increase in island visitors. The damage caused by animal introduction can be seen clearly in the case of tortoises. Tortoises are very vulnerable when they are young. Rats who come as stowaways on boats will eat the eggs of tortoises while dogs will grab hold of baby tortoises and kill them. Though animals such as dogs often come with human habitation their impact should not be ignored because no matter how cute a poodle is they still will impact their
