Working out your thumbs? Working on your hand-eye coordination? As a kid, those were a couple of many dumb things I would say when my mom told me that playing video games was a waste of time. I would say something like that because I would be so fixed on the game that I was playing, that I couldn’t find anything more intelligent to say. All I wanted to do was play games all day and I couldn’t really focus on anything else. According to the Encyclopedia of Communication and Information, video games are addictive, which is a central argument against playing video games. According to the book, game addiction is an irresistible urge to be connected, in some way, to a video game. There are negatives and positives to playing video games, but addiction …show more content…
Addiction, in some cases, can cause violence, social issues, mix-ups between what is real and what isn’t, certain health issues, and even sometimes teach kids bad language and negative morals. Some positives include quicker hand-eye coordination, and also faster decision making and faster thinking rates, memory enhancement, and many other things.
Many people say that video games have a bad influence on people, especially parents to their children; and it is very easy to see why. If you look for reasons why video games are harmful, you will find them. On the other hand, there are many pros to playing video games that I found while searching the positives of video gaming. Almost every website I saw declaring that video games could be very beneficial, stated that playing video games helps with quicker decision making, and a different level of creativity. “Both boys and girls who play video games tend to be more creative” … “A study of nearly 500 12-year-olds found that the more kids played video games, the more creative they were in tasks such as drawing pictures and writing stories” (Henion Nov. 2011). “New research discovers video games that energize players and facilitate a positive mood could also enhance creativity” (Nauert May 2008). Being chained down to anything is harmful and it always has its many issues. The biggest issue with game addiction is the violence it may cause. “Video games that feature violent actions and scenarios may lead addicted players to be desensitized to the violence” (Christopher Jan. 2013). Desensitize means to make someone less sensitive to any portrayed violence, brutality, or aggression. “On December 27, 2004, Xioyi left a suicide note saying he wanted “to join the heroes of the game he worshiped” (Lam Nov. 2010). The kid finished playing a 36-hour round of World of Warcraft and jumped off a high building. “Seventeen-year-old Daniel Petric murdered his mother and injured his father after they refused to let him play Halo 3” (Lam Nov. 2010). The kid told his dad to close his eyes because he had a surprise for him and shot him in between the eyes, just because he couldn’t get the game. Many deaths have occurred because of game addiction. One story I read about a man killed his daughter because she accidentally unplugged his gaming console. He had no violence in the past; he was a nice caring man that was just incredibly addicted to video games. The man slapped his daughter than pushed her into a chair and cracked her skull. These are horrible stories and there were many stories that were way worse than these. Game addiction is a very serious problem and it is very important to know
That’s a major question. In an article by Emily Sohn, she describes how games are actually beneficial to many. She grabs a quote from an author James Gee that states, “A good video game is challenging, entertaining, and complicated, Gee says. It usually takes 50 to 60 hours of intense concentration to finish one. Even kids who can’t sit still in school can spend hours trying to solve a video or computer game.”
In the article Dream Machines, Will Wright tries to persuade his audience to understand that video games have positive effects on the players, such as creativity, community, self-esteem, and problem solving. Wright gives many great reasons and evidence throughout his article supporting his claim. Wright shows an example and reasoning of how games help with problem-solving skills.
Have you wondered. What do these kinds of games do to kids minds, do they harm them or are they good for them? If you are one of those parents who take away video games from your kids then you need to stop. These violent role playing games have many great effects on young people. But they can also have bad effects if you don’t play them properly.
Violent video games can cause people to do very violent and horrific acts. Video games can cause teenagers to commit horrific acts such as murder, suicide, and it can teach kids to use harmful language. video Games can cause people to commit suicide, and they are games that are played all over the world. Games like call of duty can make you mad and change your mind in moment 's notice. Games can cause people to commit suicide, and they might not even show their suffering.
In the book, Everything Bad is Good For You, Steven Johnson writes, “I have no doubt that playing today’s games does in fact improve your visual intelligence and your manual dexterity, but the virtues of gaming run far deeper than hand-eye coordination” (24). Johnson explains that the gaming improves our skills and makes us smarter. Johnson also points out, “the gaming population turned out to be consistently more social, more confident, and more comfortable solving problems creatively” (153). Johnson points that the new technology like video gaming are making people smarter by teaching them about problem-solving, creating connections, and helping people become confident and creative. To illustrate, my 9-year-old niece can do her homework by herself because if she has any question, she can easily search it online without waiting for an adult to answer her questions.
Martha Nussbaum's main argument in her article is that cosmopolitanism should be a widely accepted philosophy for politics, education, and how humans treat each other. If others were taught to become a "citizen of the world" (668) and to not just focus on one culture or belonging to one group, the world could come together and acknowledge that humans are all equal. Nussbaum references another philosopher, Richard Rorty, to help her develop her own argument by refuting his original statement of the importance of nationalism and patriotism in our society. In the beginning, of Nussbaum's article she starts her argument with a point that Rorty had made about ‘politics of difference’ being an ‘internal division among America's ethnic, racial, religious, and other sub-groups’ (668). Nussbaum interprets this exert from Rorty's article by summarizing her own idea of his article stating, "He nowhere considers the possibility of a more international basis for political emotion and concern.
