The police officers, who arrested Kevin because they believed he was responsible for Dana’s injuries, foreshadows the abuse of power that the authority figures, in this case Rufus and his father, will display. I thought it was very telling that they were friends when there were no problems in the apartment, but when the food ran short no one got along. When reading that tenants were discriminated against for having kids, I was disappointed but not surprised. One lesson that Arleen taught her boys was don’t love something that they could not have, and I think this was hard for the
Often times, when a person experiences something unusual, that experience stays with them forever. The poem “Driving with Animals” by Billy Collins is about the lasting impression that an experience with deer can create. The imagery, sound devices, and figurative language that Collins uses in the poem draw the reader into the poem and makes them feel as if they are the driver in the car. The element of imagery is important in drawing the reader into the poem.
The current grade 11 University English course at St.Elizabeth Catholic High School study four books in the process of the whole semester. Obviously, the English Department has contemplated greatly over the nomination of these four books to educate your students. Although the education of these books is astonishing, I would like to introduce to you a book titled Next Year For Sure by Zoey Leigh Peterson. I believe this book would exceed your expectations, and allow the department to replace one of the four books.
Audrey Petty uses “Late Night Chitlins with Momma” to express her own close bond with her mother and how it shaped her identity; this is expressed through the narrative style, the diction and syntax, the use of food as a metaphor, and the short story’s structure. Narratively this piece does an incredible job of making the reader feel personally invested in the story. The way Audrey Petty does this is through a multitude of techniques. The point of view is a first person omnipotent, allowing for a closer read to the narrator themselves; the narrative flow is akin to being told the story verbally instead of the traditional 3rd person omnipotence.
In the movie “Shooting Dogs” there were 3 distinct characters that closely resemble the ways Aristotle, Kant and Levinas lived their lives on a daily basis. In the movie, Father Christopher is a priest that represents Aristotle and his ways of finding happiness in the community. Also, the Belgian Soldier shows human action by doing good just for the sake of his duty, similar to Kant. Finally, Joe is the local elementary school teacher who created strong relationships with many people in Rwanda. Aristotle was philosopher that truly believed that happiness is the goal of living, and we must distinguish the difference between pleasure and happiness.
In the story “Time of Wonder” the writer and illustrator Robert McCloskey creates a mesmerizing picture book. Throughout the book he relates his message to the reader of taking time to enjoy the weather and nature. Likewise, the reader is able to experience these events directly with phrases such as “IT’S RAINING ON YOU” (McCloskey 10). One event the reader is able to conjure up is the ocean in Maine with the taste of salt on their tongue. Moreover, the reader visualizes the calm sea on a sunny day and fears the roaring wind before a hurricane.
In the coming of age story “Where Are You Going Where Have You Been?” Joyce Carol Oates uses symbolism, conflict, and the third person to foreshadow fifteen-year-old Connie’s unfortunate, yet untimely fate. While one may think that the conflict stems from Connie’s promiscuity, it is clear to see her promiscuity is only a result to a much bigger conflict, her mother’s constant nagging and disapproval, alongside the lack of attention from her father. the author paints a vivid picture of what happens when a fifteen-year-old girl such as Connie goes elsewhere to find to find the love, attention, and approval that she lacks at home. All which is vital for her growth and wellbeing as a person.
The author Richard Louv wrote an essay on the connection of nature to humans in the modern world. He expands on the fact that technology has taken away our abilities to appreciate nature for it’s true beauty. Children growing up in today’s world aren’t having the resources to appreciate nature and it’s beauty because of technology, according to him. He gives examples of the changing technology in the world: cars, mobile devices, advertisements, you name it. In Last Child in the Woods, Louv uses rhetorical devices to display his thoughts through examples and evidence.
