Discuss Geert Hofstede Cultural Model, Elaborate Power Distance with examples Geert Hofstede came up with five dimensions of national cultures that show different values in various national cultures in the 1970’s. The factor analysis techniques on samples obtained from the multinational corporation IBM was used in the discovery of these dimensions. In order to determine the values that are embedded in peoples differnt cultures Geert Hofstede dimensions were used. These values may have a bearing in the behavior of people at work and in varying cultures. Collectivism In individualistic cultures people have the interest on showing thier sole potentials. Achieving the results is based on the individual’s goals and interest. In collectivistic cultures, people have the mind of holistic approach where accomplishment of results is based upon the goals and needs of the entire group. People have a good team spirit and know that collectively they can do better as opposed to being individualistic. Long vs. Short Term Orientation Long-Term Orientation is the fifth dimension, which was added after the original four dimensions. This dimension was identified by Michael Bond and was initially called Confucian dynamism. Geert Hofstede adopted this dimension in to his framework, and called it long vs. short term orientation. This deals with values and behaviours of employees in relation to their longevity in the work place.Those with long service feel they are better off than others and as result are not in aposition to accept changes brought by new arrivers. Power distance with examples According to this dimension people from all societies are not equal. The dimension expresses the attitude of the culture towards these inequalities amongst people. This gives an indication that Angolans follow a hierarchical sequence whereby every person has a place where they fall. This organisational hierachy indicate that there is inherent inequalities. The bossss practices autocracy and their juniors are not pro active hence want to be given orders.. France France has a score of 68 and that is fairly high in as far as power distance is concerned. The way child raising is done is such that they become emotionally reliant on their parents to a certain extent. Teachers and superiors to children end up battling with the dependency of these chhildren. Therefore the french society has an acceptable fair degree of inequality. Ultimately, power distance becomes geographically centrallised in both government and private sector.
