Abstract This seminar paper deals with language and gender, more precisely; it deals with gender differences in language use. It also reviews a range of studies by linguists, psychologist, anthropologist and feminists that have been conducted over the past 30 years covering that topic. The reader will be introduced to terms such as gender, language and identity, “dominance” and “difference” approach, the term “cultural broker”, institutional coerciveness… What will also be mentioned is whether the gender affects the way people engage in conversation and how they use language in communication. The relationship between language and gender is almost always mediated by social activities or practices (social context) that are recognized as “gendered” in certain communities and cultures.
