“Why do traditional English teachers force students to read a story that is over 400 years old? What could this play possibly have to do with us?” It’s a question teenagers ask time and again. Well, the tragedy Romeo and Juliet is a perfect example of why we continue to study Shakespeare’s work. While the story may be written in a language that’s foreign to contemporary audiences, the story itself doesn’t age. In fact, upon initial observation, one would probably not place a real-life 21st century lynching and the play Romeo and Juliet in to the same category; however, the two stories share striking similarities. Romeo and Juliet, much like Teen Couple Executed by their Parents...for daring to fall in love, is about a teenage love story that ends in tragedy. Both couples although forbidden, fell in love only to be separated by death. Another striking similarity, would be the very adult like decisions that the couples were forced to make due to the childish choices their parents made. Both teens felt obligated to choose between life or love because of their parents prejudice. Bias opinions made the parents forbid love between the two teen couples. In the end, unreasonable opinions about different social classes and opposing families were the cause of the two couples deaths. As stated before the teens death was not of natural causes, but by their will to die for love and their parents will to kill their own children. Have you ever read or heard the story of Romeo and Juliet? It is a tragic story about a girl and a boy who fall in love with each other,and at the end they end up killing themself. It was tragic because there were a total of six deaths including the main characters who were the ones who fell in love, Romeo and Juliet. They were from two different families who did not get along and hated each other. Because of the families hate Romeo and Juliet were not accepted to be together and which made one of their reasons to kill themself.

In today’s world, gender expectations and roles of men and women are a highly debated topic. However, the reconsidering of these expectations is not a new phenomenon. Set in Verona, Italy, the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare explores the reversal and fluidity of characteristics usually assigned to a specific gender. In this play, two young people fall in love and end up tragically taking their lives as a result of their forbidden love. Shakespeare suggests that men are not necessarily masculine, women are not necessarily feminine, and that when people are forced by society to act the way their gender is “supposed” to, problems will arise.
