Gender pay gap is a prevalent issue in the sports industry, where female athletes are paid significantly less than their male counterparts. The gender pay gap in sports exists across all levels, from amateur to professional, and in virtually every sport. The gap is particularly wide in high-profile, male-dominated sports such as soccer, basketball, and tennis. With that, there are several factors that contribute to the gender pay gap in sports, but two of the main reasons are limited sponsorships, media attention towards women in sports. The gender wage gap in sports is significantly impacted by the lack of sponsorship opportunities. In comparison to male athletes, female athletes frequently have fewer options to secure sponsorships, which has an impact on their ability to make money. A better way putting it is the quote stated by the Zippia Team “Female athletes get paid less because, in general, the professional sports leagues that female athletes are involved with have smaller audiences and generate a lot less revenue than male professional sports leagues.” (Zippia Team). With that, companies see the expansion in their brand with male athletes for a fan base and the attention they receive …show more content…
Most women's exposure is not related to sports but to their attraction and looks. Female athletes are often portrayed in the media in a way that differs from their male counterparts. This was discovered by a 2018 study from Sports Illustrated Magazines “Female athletes are more likely to be depicted in sexually objectified ways” (Sports Illustrated Magazines). They are frequently sexualized and objectified, with a greater emphasis placed on their physical appearance and fashion choices than their athletic ability. The media also tends to highlight female athletes' personal lives and relationships, while male athletes are primarily judged on their athletic
In Liz Clarke’s “Equity” a closer look at the wage gap between men and women in sports is being observed. From soccer to hockey, female athletes are paid significantly less than their male counterparts. The case is the same for even the best in the world. Clarke presents the reader with a lawsuit filed in March of 2019 against the U.S. Soccer Federation for pay inequality, gender discrimination, unsatisfactory training facilities, and more. However, the gigantic gap between salaries between the U.S. men's and women's soccer is the focal point of Clarke’s article.
Clearly, this is why the WNBA should get paid as much as men do. A second reason why the WNBA should get paid more is that women’s sports don’t get as nearly as
I sadly have to say womens athletics are also often disregarded. For example, the now-famous tennis match between tennis Hall of Famers Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs shows the way women's sports are viewed throughout our society. King's goal was to close the pay gap between her and her colleagues because there was a great difference in between their salaries. Billie Jean King felt that “women's sports were still generally treated as a novelty,” (Ott 2). She needed to beat Riggs in order to demonstrate that she is not inferior to men.
When comparing athletic races for each gender, the pay is the same because the difference in skill is so small compared to other sports in which the men are a lot better at, because of this women draw the same amount of fans at the events and the amount of money generated is the same for each gender. This also relates to tennis as the female athletes are not that much lower in level of competition to the
When looking at gross income for female athletes, they are still making significantly less than their male counterparts, but they are now making more when compared to the money they bring into their respective industries. For example, men in the NBA make an average of 7.3 million dollars a year while females make just over 100 thousand a year; even though that disparity is substantial, the NBA brings in 10 billion dollars annually, and the WNBA does not make a profit. If both sexes were paid proportionally, women in the league would be losing money, but the recent women's movements for equality have still allowed them to make a comfortable living. Regardless, there still needs to be a more extensive infrastructure to support them at the same level as men. That might be partial because men can compete at a higher physical level, but either way, resources are being poured into women's sports to keep them afloat.
In addition, women’s sports aren’t the only ones seeing an incline in participation. The media
It is unfathomable in modern society for an African American woman to be forced to sit on the back of a public bus. It is unfathomable in modern society for a Hispanic man to be denied service in an establishment. It is unfathomable in modern society for a state to deny a homosexual couple a marriage license. So why is such a vast discrepancy between the wages of male and female athletes still acceptable? The type of rigorous, unstoppable advocacy used to gain support for the civil rights movement, the legalization of gay marriage, and the enactment of stricter gun legislation needs be applied to this issue along with increased media coverage of the gender wage gap in professional sports, improvements to the Equal Pay Act, more legislation that benefits female athletes like Title IX, and ultimately the unwavering belief that equality is a human right guaranteed to both women and men and the standard by which both athletes need to be
This pay difference can discourage the girls that want to become professional athletes. Thus, limiting the sports available for women to play and places to play in. Professional female athletes should be paid the same amount as professional male athletes because women should have equal representation and pay as the men, women are just as successful in sports as the men, and the best players are getting paid by foreign leagues to not
However, this is not true because men and women should be equal, but they are not currently. The gender pay gap is significant because it speaks to bigger issues of discrimination and gender inequality in out society. The message is conveys about the value of worth of female athletes in comparison to their male counterparts is more important than the money involves. It sends an message that female athletes’ abilities and accomplishments are not as valuable or significant when they are paid less than male athletes for performing the same tasks. This may discourage young women and girls from pursuing sports careers or reinforce unfavorable gender stereotypes and biases, among other detrimental effects.
Women’s sport is on the rise but many female athletes still earn considerably less than their male counterparts. There is no definitive answer to this question as there are many differing opinions on the matter (Carp). However, some sources suggest that female athletes do not deserve equal pay as male athletes because they do not generate the same level of revenue, they do not have the
The gap between men and women has always seemed to be prevalent in our world it seems like it. From working wages to basic rights, women always seem to not be considered equal to men. In professional sports, for example, female athletes are paid less than their male counterparts, even if they execute better than them. "I cannot think of any other industry that has such a wage gap, really. Depending on country context and sport, a man can be a billionaire and a woman [in the same discipline] cannot even get a minimum salary" (Beatrice Frey, sport partnership manager at UN Women).
Why are women in sports being paid less than men? In the past, women didn’t have the same rights as men because they were seen as less than or property. Now women have more opportunities however they are still facing the same problems like with money. Women in sports are not respected as men and it’s happening everywhere around the world. If women are paid the same as men everyone will be equal.
The gender pay gap is the difference between earnings made by men and earnings by women. The Gender pay gap is generally due to various reasons, such as differences discrimination in hiring process, differences in negotiations for pay, differences in education choices, differences in the jobs men can go compare to women can’t easily go for. Some factors that cause the gender pay gap: • Women leave and re-enter the workforce to meet their family and children expectations • Low pay for some jobs, like childcare due to historical trends that continue • Lower educational levels of women due to traditions • Discrimination in the hiring process, compensation and promotion at workplace.
Gender Inequality in sports is an issue as old as sport itself. I choose this topic because we as a society seem to sweep it under the rug time after time. Women in sports however, try to address the issue only to have it go on deaf ears, leaving them to continue in the sport hoping something will change. Over the last few decades, strides have been made, but he sport remains an institution dominated by men. These women, whether they are in sport or in the business world, want a fair chance to be on the same level as their male counterparts.
When the media did show the female athletes they always showed the negative plays in the clips of commercials making the girls look bad and weak. “Womens sports continues to be covered in ways that convey the message to audiences that women's sports
