Gender Pay Gap in Professional Sports Although there have been efforts made to solve the gender pay gap problem, it continues to be an issue in professional sports. (The Telescope) found that the WNBA loses 10 million dollars a year and the NBA makes 8 billion dollars a year. One major issue to this problem is the inequity of how female athletes are treated. Another issue is corporate greed, since these larger organizations could afford to pay all athletes equally. Finally, While some sports are moving to make positive changes, much work still needs to be done to achieve full equality. First, female athletes are not treated equally. One reason for this is, not the most paid NBA player but one of them Stephen Curry was making 46 million dollars in 2022 and some of the highest paid WNBA players were making 230,000 thousand dollars(CBS News) The three highest paid players being—Diana Taurasi, Jewell Loyd and Breanna Stewart—In Addition CBS News also found that most of the WNBA players aren’t even close to making that much. Most of them were making around 130,000 thousand dollars. In soccer the men get paid much more but the women are so much better. They have won multiple world cups and the farthest the men have made it was 3rd place in

The NBA owns the WNBA so they could pay the WNBA players more because NBA players get paid millions of dollars. On the other hand in soccer they have worked to change the gender pay gap because they had enough money to do so. Another organization that has worked pretty well with handling this is tenis. Serina Williams makes around 50 million dollars and Roger Federer makes 84 million dollars. 54 million dollars is a lot but still 34 million dollars is a big difference too.(CBS News) Also The Book One Life found that women during the world cup had to play on artificial turf which is a lot easier to get hurt on then the grass that the men get to play
Women have been playing basketball alongside men since the beginning of basketball. They have played physical and hard games, just like men, but women are still paid incredibly low. Although WNBA players do not draw as large of crowds as men, women who play in the WNBA should be given an increase in the amount they are paid because women can be just as skilled as men who play basketball, and they are not paid enough despite being professional athletes. WNBA players deserve a higher paycheck because women who play professional basketball have the same skill and capability as men. For example, there have even been women drafted into the NBA because they had the same level of skill as NBA players.
Considering that the WNBA is actually costing money instead of making it, the roughly $100,000 the average player in the league is making looks to be quite generous. In conclusion, I stand behind the female athletes. I would be quite furious if my income was only a fraction of those who are the opposite sex of me, and it would not sit well. However, logically thinking, it is not sustainable to be paid these large sums of money female athletes are asking for because of the lack of revenue their entertainment creates.
Clearly, this is why the WNBA should get paid as much as men do. A second reason why the WNBA should get paid more is that women’s sports don’t get as nearly as
Title IX was meant to order change in American education by illiminating discrimination on gender, but instead it still has problems and could use some improvement. One of the main splits between men and women athletics is the pay gaps between the two sexes. The salary difference between the United States Mens and Womens National Teams proves this. For example, “Each player on the USWNT earns $99,000 per year provided the team wins 20 “friendlies” (exhibition matches), the minimum number of matches they would play. By contrast, each men’s player would earn $263,320 for the same feat and would still earn $100,000 if the team lost all 20 games,” (Walters 3).
When looking at gross income for female athletes, they are still making significantly less than their male counterparts, but they are now making more when compared to the money they bring into their respective industries. For example, men in the NBA make an average of 7.3 million dollars a year while females make just over 100 thousand a year; even though that disparity is substantial, the NBA brings in 10 billion dollars annually, and the WNBA does not make a profit. If both sexes were paid proportionally, women in the league would be losing money, but the recent women's movements for equality have still allowed them to make a comfortable living. Regardless, there still needs to be a more extensive infrastructure to support them at the same level as men. That might be partial because men can compete at a higher physical level, but either way, resources are being poured into women's sports to keep them afloat.
This pay difference can discourage the girls that want to become professional athletes. Thus, limiting the sports available for women to play and places to play in. Professional female athletes should be paid the same amount as professional male athletes because women should have equal representation and pay as the men, women are just as successful in sports as the men, and the best players are getting paid by foreign leagues to not
The average professional athlete is paid $2.6 million per year. The average salary in the US is $50,500 a year. That is a difference of almost $2.5 million a year, and college athletes are getting none of that. College athletes should be paid because all the money made goes to coaches, the NCAA, and the broadcasters. In addition, what if a player gets injured how will they pay for it.
However, this is not true because men and women should be equal, but they are not currently. The gender pay gap is significant because it speaks to bigger issues of discrimination and gender inequality in out society. The message is conveys about the value of worth of female athletes in comparison to their male counterparts is more important than the money involves. It sends an message that female athletes’ abilities and accomplishments are not as valuable or significant when they are paid less than male athletes for performing the same tasks. This may discourage young women and girls from pursuing sports careers or reinforce unfavorable gender stereotypes and biases, among other detrimental effects.
They really make a lot of money in general. Their salaries are excessive. These athletes get paid so much money to play a game for several months of the year.”LeBron James, after agreeing to a three year, $100 million contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers, will finally be the highest paid player in the NBA. He will make slightly more than $30.9 million in the first year, and his salary for the 2017-18 season exceeds $33.2 million...”(Greenberg).
Women in sports can compete the same, and sometimes even stronger, as men so their pay should just be as much as them, and the gender pay gap shouldn’t be present. If both sexes play the exact same sport, why do they have different fiscal values? Many female athletes are equally talented compared to men so they should at least get paid the same. “The U.S. women’s team will get a $2 million bonus for winning the FIFA Women 's World Cup. A lot of money to you and me, yes.
Why are women in sports being paid less than men? In the past, women didn’t have the same rights as men because they were seen as less than or property. Now women have more opportunities however they are still facing the same problems like with money. Women in sports are not respected as men and it’s happening everywhere around the world. If women are paid the same as men everyone will be equal.
As of 2015 women are only making between $0.76 and $0.80 for every dollar men are making. The pay gap does vary by each job, CNBC says “Of course, the pay gap varies greatly by industry. The disparity was largest — nearly 30 percent — between men and women in finance and insurance, without controlling for job title, education and years of experience, among other factors,” click here for link. As you can see women are clearly paid less than men of the same career and 83% of women believe that along with 68% of men who feel they are being paid more as well. In addition to this women have come forward and explained how they are paid less than men who are their co-hosts, co-workers,
The gender pay gap is the difference between earnings made by men and earnings by women. The Gender pay gap is generally due to various reasons, such as differences discrimination in hiring process, differences in negotiations for pay, differences in education choices, differences in the jobs men can go compare to women can’t easily go for. Some factors that cause the gender pay gap: • Women leave and re-enter the workforce to meet their family and children expectations • Low pay for some jobs, like childcare due to historical trends that continue • Lower educational levels of women due to traditions • Discrimination in the hiring process, compensation and promotion at workplace.
Gender Inequality in sports is an issue as old as sport itself. I choose this topic because we as a society seem to sweep it under the rug time after time. Women in sports however, try to address the issue only to have it go on deaf ears, leaving them to continue in the sport hoping something will change. Over the last few decades, strides have been made, but he sport remains an institution dominated by men. These women, whether they are in sport or in the business world, want a fair chance to be on the same level as their male counterparts.
There's still discrimination because men love to show off how big they are or how much they can lift, making women feel like they are not good enough to be on the team. Even though women's sports have grown over the past decades, women’s sporting events have not grown more popular, media coverage of female athletes is not up to date. Three decades later they finally realize that women sporting channels are harder to find, and the presens on female athletes on tv are low, lower than they were back in the day. LA local networks affiliates dedicated about five percent of their coverage to women's sports in 1989, in 2014 the percentage had dropped 3.2 percent and because they took more time to focus on the women sports it was better then than it is now. Even though the participation of girl sports has increased, the commercials and highlight shows have made the girls look weak and the people interested in wanting to come and watch them play.
