Traditionally, women are considered as feeble and inferior and Ismene is represented by these characteristics. Even at the danger of challenging a man’s authority, Antigone believes that a woman should stick to her morals. Ismene disputes that because she and Antigone are women, they lack the power to defy the states. She implies, “We are women and we do not fight with men… and I’ll obey the men in charge”. Ismene is under the impression that being born a woman is somehow a subsequent condition with men being “stronger”.
Women during the middle ages faced a lot of oppression from men and were taught to be submissive. Women during this period desired to have sovereignty over men. Most women were told to be respectful and follow men commands that were thrown at them. Women duties were cooking, caring for the house, and providing for their kids. If women wanted to do anything other than care for the household, they would be looked down upon and titled as an unfit mother or wife.
This shows how there’s a specific role of women in the society and they could break from it but it is looked down upon in the society. Compared to guys they can be who they wanna be but women can’t due to this role. The society doesn’t see that a person is a person no matter what gender they have. They also don’t see that people don’t have any control of their gender when they are born. The same thing goes for black people in this book.
Other than women who are goddesses have the advantage compared to others who are often disrespected because of their status. Women were represented as worthless human beings to stratify a man sexual pleasure. Therefore women only contribute to heroes by either using their bodies as an object, giving guidances and a word of advice. But also women do have thematic significance in expressing the truth about the nature of a woman and of male-female relations. As for instance in Shamhat case, the temple prostitute.
Niang is presented as a harsh character, and also a discriminating view against the stepchildren and her own daughter. One evidence to prove is that when she says ‘ DEliberately and viciously, Niang is set about beating her daughter to earnest.” tHe adverb “ DEliberately”, the exact definition is “ on purpose and international”. The writer uses this word to describe her biased opinion against the stepchildren, intentionally slapping her little sister for no reason. The adverb ‘ viciously’ has an exact definition of ‘ In a violent and aggressive way’. This can not be considered as a metaphor, since ‘ viciously” is usually used for describing fierce animals.
This shows how many cases of abuse are unknown even in the hispanic community because the women want to protect their abusers. Women do this out of fear of losing the little they have. Also, Sally is compared to a dog, which is another example of dehumanizing women. Cisneros uses the women in Esperanza’s life to display the mistreatment of women in the hispanic culture. Esperanza sees this mistreatment in all aspects of her life; her family, her neighborhood, and her friends.
She uses the foil to explore how Irene and Clare experience womanhood differently and connects it to the expectations of women in the 1920s. She mainly uses motherhood and marriage to exhibit these differences in their lives based on off race. She uses motherhood to show how Clare hates being a mother because of her fear of her husband finding out she’s black through her daughter’s skin tone. Irene appreciates being a mother even though she sacrifices her own desires for it; she understands the huge responsibility that comes with being a mother and embraces it. Marriage is used to portray Clare’s fear of her husband, and it shows Irene’s insecurity in her marriage when she suspects Clare and Brian are having an affair, yet her faith in her husband when she blames herself.
On the other hand, we see the power of feminine motion on Beowulf when he first encounters Grendel’s mother. She is a mythical monster who feeds on the flesh of humans. She is not given a name but referred to only as “Grendel’s mother”. Like most mothers, she takes on the roles as a nurturer, she must defend the honor of her child. During the Anglo-Saxon period, and even in today’s society, females portrayed as peace keepers because they are not supposed to get involved in any of action that starts some kind of feud.
