“He say, I tell her one thing, she do another. Never do what I say. Always backtalk”(35). In the book, “The Color Purple” by Alice Walker, we see different people who do things that others wouldn’t do. People who don’t follow the “normal” way or the “traditional” way of doing things. There are many people shown in this book who don’t follow the “traditional”gender roles. They try to fight it or just don’t agree with it and do what they aren't supposed to. Three people in particular stick out to me.
The first person is Sofia. She is a hard working, strong headed girl who doesn’t like to follow what women should be doing. She fights back and talks back when she thinks that she isn't being treated right. She also says whatever is on her mind

When Sofia married Harpo, he couldn’t get her to do what he wanted. She always did what she wanted and said what she wanted. But one day Harpo went to Celie for advice and she told him to beat her to make her listen. So, because of her advice Harpo does just that but just ends up getting beat up by Sofia instead. Celie says, “Next time us see Harpo his face a mess of bruises. His lip cut. One of his eyes shut like a fist. He walk stiff and say his teef ache. I say, What happen to you, Harpo? He say, Oh, me and that mule. She fractious, you know” (36). I think that what happened before this is that Harpo tried to do what Celie said to do but he got beat up because he didn’t expect Sofia to fight back. She didn’t want to just sit there and take the beating so she fought back. In order to not get embarrassed he came up with the lie that she just went crazy in the fields and he ended up getting hurt trying to get her in the house. Another time that Soifa fought back was when she and Harpo were at home. Celie came over for something but ended up getting a front row seat to them fighting. “But it's Harpo and Sofia. They fighting like two mens” (37) A little bit later in the fight Celie describes one of the scenes that she saw saying, “She stand there in her slip. She never blink a …show more content…
When we first see Shug Avery she is sick and is getting taken care of by Celie and Mr. ____. One day when Mr. ____ was in the room with Shug Avery she tells him, “Turn lose my goddam hand, she say to Mr. ____. What the matter with you, you crazy? I don’t need no weak little boy can’t say no to his daddy hanging on me. I need me a man, she say. A man. She look at him and roll her eyes and laugh” (47). She says this to Mr. ____ with no hesitation. Normally no man would take this from someone that they are caring for and they would either beat or kick them out for this level of disrespect but, Mr. ____ just takes it, says nothing, and backs up into the corner of the room. It was also not common or normal at all for a woman with “traditional” views or ideas to speak to a man like this. Women would have normally spoken to men with the utmost respect as they were the head of the household and the people who cared for them. Later on in the story she gets into another relationship with Grady and she ends up basically being the breadwinner in their relationship. When we first meet Grady we see that Celie and Mr. ____ do not like him one bit and are upset that Shug Avery is in a relationship with him. Celie and Shug have a small conversation about how they met and Celie mentions that, “She buy Grady anything he think he want” (109). The “traditional” gender
Shug speaks up for her, but Mr.____ becomes upset about letting Celie go, and mutters “My wife can’t do this. My wife can’t do that. No wife of mines… He go on and on.” (Walker 73).
Sophia, Shug, and Nettie are a strong, independent women who instructed Celie to fight Mr.. Nettie advised Celie that “[you] need to fight” and Celie responded that “I [do not] know how to fight. All I know is how to stay alive” (17). Celie thought that quiet being submissive was the only way to stay alive. Nettie said to fight and Celie thinks she is dead. Sophia fought the Mayor and the white townspeople beat her up so badly that Celie was shocked that Sophia survived.
This quote means that Celie is taking the role of her mother, as Celie’s mother is ill and is unable to do what Pa wants, so he turns to Celie. Raping, abusing and making her do work. Celie is a 14-year-old girl living with her sister,
Confidential relationships are an integral part of day-to-day life, as they allow for growth and independence within a person. These trusting relationships can stem from family, friends, and faith, all alike. The Color Purple, written by Alice Walker, shows Celie, as someone deeply affected by these 3 types of relationships, as a way to show the personal effects of confidant relationships. Celie uses these relationships as a guide to grow and become more aware, of herself and the world around. Alice Walker's The Color Purple utilizes Nettie, Shug, and God, as Celie’s trusted and guiding confidants, to demonstrate how strong interpersonal relationships are necessary for growth in identity and confidence.

The problem of Mr. ____ gets taken care of when Shug and her discover the letters that Mr. ____ has been withholding. Shug can see that he does not care for Celie at all, and that Celie has to get away from him. After reading the letters, they just lie together and for the first time since Nettie, she has a family member. She calls Shug her sister.
Shug Avery, a gorgeous, flamboyant, and “scandalous” blues singer leads a successful career on her own, traveling the country singing. She refuses to let any man control her, and Celie’s husband even treats her more respectfully than he does his own wife. While Shug was initially bitter and cruel towards Celie, she quickly became her biggest supporter. Most noticeably, Shug demands Albert stop beating Celie, saying: “I won’t leave…until I know Albert won’t even think about beating you” (Walker, 1982). In addition to Shug, Sophia, another African American womanist, is known throughout the novel for her stubborn refusal to let any man or woman overpower her.
Once Shug is able to feel acquainted with Celie they find themselves doing everything together. Shug teaches Celies about herself mentally, spiritually, and physically with her body. The book captures the feelings held between the Celie and Shug with vibrant words and sentences between the two characters. ¨She say, I love you, Miss Celie. And then she haul off and kiss me on the mouth (Walker, 1982).¨
In the beginning of the book, Celie describes Mister as a man no family wants to marry the girls off to because his last wife ran away and left him with 6 kids. When Celie is sold into the marriage, she is forced to sexually satisfy him and take care of the kids. Throughout most of the story she is sexually, emotionally, mentally and physically abused by Mister. He takes and takes from Celie but never gives anything back to him.

Literary Analysis: The Color Purple Every individual learns something new or different every day, whether it is somebody’s favorite color or learning something new about yourself. Many people can either learn from their hardships and past experiences, while others may learn from other people’s past through stories or guidance. Throughout the novel, The Color Purple written by Alice Walker, the main character, Celie, learned how to love herself, that everyone makes mistakes, and face her fears.
Alice Walker give power to the female characters via female bonding, which enables them to discover their talents. It is imperative to notice that Walker female characters achieve psychological strength after overcoming oppression, but the male characters realize psychological wholeness and health when they recognize women’s pain and admit that they have a role in it. Walker constructs a characterization of blues women (blues singers and single women) who continue defining their sexuality in The Color Purple that cast the characters in the role of conjure women who transform and redefine black female sexuality through the alternative view of womanhood. Blues women did not resist the 19th-century ideology but simply disrupted it for different values that overthrew the Puritan ethic.
Family Through According to Alice Walker Alice Walker had a lot to say about family in her book, The Color Purple, in this book family had loose conditions and was often inter tangled. Celie’s friends and family were remarkably confusing and complicated at times, because many people were sleeping with people they were not married to and that was married to their friends. However, no family is perfect, so why would this one be, in the end it was all Celie and everybody else really needed.
