Mary Wollstonecraft was a key component in the movement of rights for women. Her philosophies on equality were a precursor for women around the world who would join together and fight back against the injustice they faced due to their gender. Wollstonecraft promoted her ideals during the middle of the 18th century at a point in time where rights for women were non-existent and she lived her whole life without any true rights of her own. Years after her death, her values were continued by women who were trying to gain the right the vote. The fight for the rights of women has continued since then and still continues in modern feminist movements.

However, biased expectations towards women, concerning both themselves and motherhood, have remained relatively unchanged. In, Maria, these expectations were addressed as the female sensibility. When describing Maria it is said that, “nay such was the sensibility which often mantled over it, that she frequently appeared, like a large proportion of her sex only born to feel” (Wollstonecraft 32). In any society men and women are expected to act a certain way. However, the female sensibility: which encompasses how one should dress, manners, etiquette, and reform have been used to suppress the position of women in society.

This movement fought for the right for women to vote because women were denied the democratic rights that were given to men and were forced to focus on the cult of domesticity. The movement started in the late eighteenth century however it was renewed during the Second Great Awakening when reform movements started gaining popularity. The suffrage movement was aided by the abolition movement because slavery gave women a reason to unite for a separate cause. This was a new reform movement, unlike women’s suffrage and abolition, which both had roots that were as deep as those of the country’s, and was unique because of the unusually undemocratic responses that society and its people reacted with. Unlike abolition and women’s suffrage, the asylum and penitentiary reform movement did not gather popularity
