Introduction
The tourism industry has seen tremendous growth in recent decades. It has become one of the most fundamental tools in the promotion of greater economic health of many countries today. One of the greatest impacts that have come from tourism has been the creation of vast employment opportunities for nations at a global scale.
From a much broader perspective, employment within the sector has been advantageous to economies as a whole at all ends of the spectrum. However, upon closer inspection it’s clear that what has failed to be recognised by many, are the vast gendered divisions that exist within it. As within society, individuals are continuously subject to segregation on the basis differences in power, social class, education and economic status. However, tourism workforces, as with many other jobs have been subject to further divisions most notable being that of gender. Although gendered divisions within tourism differ and intensify on an international scale (Sharpley et al, 2002), what remains consistent in all are the inequalities that exist as a result of these gendered divisions. The equality of genders has always remained a contentious issue (Khan, 2011:05), however, in tourism, gendered divisions are seen to have had more negative repercussions and created greater challenges for women to progress to particular roles within the industry.
