Generation Y also known as the Me, Me, Me Generation is the generation that follows after Generation X. This consists of a group of people called Millennials who are born after 1980 to the 1990s (Ball and Gotsill 17). Millennials are known to be tech-savvy, open-minded, and informed (Stein n.p.)
Generation X, a term coined by Douglas Coupland, consists of people who were born from the late 1960s to the 1970s and are called “Xers” (Ball and Gotsill 17). “Xers” are known to be optimistic, self-assured, confident, and ready to hear the opinions of each person (Ball and Gotsill 19).
This may seem like an exaggeration but millennials live and breathe the Internet. The only way to access the Internet anytime and anywhere would be through the use of Wi-Fi. In 1985, America’s regulator for telecommunications wanted to operate a wireless service that didn’t require a government license. Micheal Marcus, a brilliant engineer, took on the challenge to create the world’s first wireless spectrum. To further enhance the capabilities of this device, they used some military technology in order to widen the range of connection and less chances of signal interference and interception. The success of this device became evident when many companies began to make various wireless products. This became so popular that it turned into a new standard called the Ethernet standard. In 1999, the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA) was formed in order to create more products that are compatible to the wireless spectrum. The WECA decided that the wireless spectrum needed a less complicated name so the members of this alliance voted on a name, thus Wi-Fi was chosen. They needed a market to sell this product to and in the end chose Apple, which was well known for technological innovation. From there, the popularity and _____ of Wi-Fi grew into the phenomenon it is today (A brief history of Wi-Fi
I always thought the generations were named in alphabetical order and then some generations gained nicknames over time. However, now knowing they are based on events in those generations' lives, especially tragic ones, I am rethinking what each generational name really means or refers to. I am appreciative that she included examples of the events that shaped the generations’ names as it gives perspective on the whole naming process. I was also intrigued by the suggested names for the 1995-2012 generation, especially considering the generation is now named. I am wondering where the name “Generation Z” came from, and if there are any nicknames that marketing agencies are producing to promote products to the 1995-2015
WPA2 –Wi-Fi protected access version 2 This security was made because of the 802.11i wireless security standard. WPA2 is very similar to WPA but it uses AES – advanced encryption standard to encrypt. AES has a 128 bit key whereas DES – data encryption standard which was used before AES has a 64bit key. 64bit keys take a lot less time to break than 128bit key.
Wifi WPS: It stands for “Wi-Fi Protected Setup” and provides simplified mechanisms to configure secure wireless
After Lamarr died she got famous for her invention, and today people call Lamarr “ The Mother of Wifi” because of her invention. Also when Lamarr died she got credit for her invention because before she died nobody accepted her d her invention and didn’t care for it until she died. Hedy Lamarr’s invention impacted the world with new technology such as WI-FI, Bluetooth, and more… Her invention did lead to something else; actually, WI-FI led to us having wireless cell phones and computers. The military declined her invention back then but now they are using the advanced technology that was once before an invention that got declined by the military. The invention did a huge impact on us today with the frequency hopping invention.
Mark Bauerlein makes it extremely clear that Generation Y, The Millennials, are losing their intelligence and drive to acquire and obtain knowledge. Bauerlein states in the beginning of his book that he is not here to undermine and look down upon this Generation but to share the facts of reality, a reality that the young people of today simple do not care about their education and see social media such as Twitter and Instagram a more important way of spending their free time. This Generation is extremely lucky, never before has so
According to Professor Jeffrey Bosworth, in his editorial “Hunting for Hope in Modern America,” he discusses the “screwed” millennial generation and the potential they have to be successful, despite current existing United States problems. Bosworth explains this from three different perspectives: the current issues in America, the positive attributes of the millennial generation, and what the millennial generation should do to succeed. In Bosworth’s opening proposition he elucidates the “[millennial] generation is screwed”. He expounds the millennial generation is predicted to “do worse than the previous generation”.
The predecessor’s generation feels that millennials are out of line but they are just reluctant to accept changing times because they are used to things being a certain way. In the end, the anger amongst predecessor’s generation towards millennials come out to be nothing but envy because they feel like they are obsolete (Ellin 211). In the words of Roy Cohen, an executive coach in New York, “they’re an extraordinary generation that we should be celebrating, not dumping on” (Ellin 212). The millennials generation is looked down on because they do not follow the old
“The Beat (Up) Generation: Millennials’ Attitudes about Work” is an article written by Abby Ellin and published in Psychology Today. It talks about the generation born between 1982 and 2004, how they react to working around the older generation and why they are hated by the older generation. The millennial generation was born during the rise of technology. They can do a lot of work remotely and not have to work as hard because of all the technology they have access to and the boomer generation doesn’t understand it they equate working hard with time and physical work. The boomers feel that millennials are just lazy and have no respect.
Growing up, I had the stereotypical American childhood: when I wanted to see my friends, I hopped on my bike, rode across town, and knocked on their doors. That was how things were, and if you were to ask my dad, or his dad, they would have similar recollections of their own past. This idealistic childhood is mirrored in TV shows, books, and the news. However, times are changing. My generation was born into an interesting time period.
Julie Hanus wrote the “The Kid in the Corner Office” which made many assumptions about our generation in the workplace. She simply thinks that we are self-centered and generally only think about instant gratification and ourselves. Which she believes makes us near useless in the workplace, because we are afraid of taking risks. She also believes that our generation has become one that skips from job to job in search of more praise from management. Counter to this Hanus states that our generation is loyal to our employers.
Jean –Jacques Rousseau believed that technology, knowledge and science corrupts human beings, and that human nature is good. The more knowledge a person have, many take greed into their hand or the more money a person has they believe they are better than another person. Some also believe the more money they have, the more problems they will have in their life. There is a saying that goes “it’s better to be poor and happy than being rich and miserable.” In the case of technology, it is something that corrupts human beings.
But wait were not the baby boomers the generation of “the pre-AIDS years of free love, the free education, the happy dilettantish flirtations with radicalism,….. the big cars, the enduring sense of smugness”(Hawking). Furthermore, now they have the nerve to accuse their kids for their repercussions. The millenials are the general population who having to experience the “hangover from the baby boomers party”(Hawking). Millenials are drowning in college debt and having to pay off liabilities that the baby boomers generation created.
Technology on Children’s Social Development Technology The technology in the millennial generation is quite improving, increasing, developing and addicting. Technology pertains to something situated at home and academic environment (Rowan, n.d.). Therefore, it can be referred to as computers, televisions, cellphones and other electronic gadgets. Children now a day are more exposed to technology since they like to explore new things.
The millennial generation are people born from 1980 to 2000. The millennial generation is claimed to be lazy, narcissistic, and stunted in growth. A study showed that 58% more college students scored higher on a narcissism scale in 2009 than in 1982. It also talks about how the millennial generation have been patted on the back too much, because the millennials got so many participation awards growing up, they believe they should be promoted every two years. Not only that, most emerging adults 18 to 29 still live with their parents rather than a spouse.
The article “The Me Me Me Generation” by Joel Stein mentions how Millennials are a self-centred generation who have been raised with many participation awards and parents who mistakenly believed that strengthening their self-esteem was they key to success rather than focusing more on strengthening up their character and skills. Stein mentions that the younger generation lives mostly through screens, whether those on phones, iPad’s, or computers, and believes someway that it is entitled to success without experiencing the rough situations in lifetime. Stein also presented studies showing that the incidence of narcissistic personality disorder among Millennials is massive. Stein concludes the article by mentioning that this has not taken him by surprise, because this began with their parents’ generation, the Baby Boomers, or known as the “Me Generation.” Millennials seek to make their own mark on the world.
