The conversation involving Dave Brandon was very insightful, and I personally learned a lot about being a part of teams from the presentation. Being a sports fan, I love hearing the message that Mr. Brandon shares about teams and how they are vital to organizational success. The most important lessons I learned from the presentation are:
1. The virtue of generational leadership, which is based in understanding where a person is coming from, will have an effect on their perspective surrounding the goals of the organization. Therefore, taking the time to understand each member of the team will allow the leader to realize how they will view the team goals, and provide them with the best motivation to succeed.
2. Realizing the culture of the team: The basis of this theory involves realizing the pre-existing culture of the team, and how the team members want to change the culture. Without gaining a proper perspective of the existing team culture, a leader could damage the aspects that are working for the team, while making changes that will not enable the goals of the team to be achieved.
3. Balance the old values with the new ideas from the outside: This team concept is based in merging the previous values of the team with the new values being established by a new team leader. As a team leader, a person should be open to merging the

While watching the movie Remember the Titans, one cannot help but notice many different leadership styles. There are examples of servant leadership and non-examples of servant leadership. Some of the different coach's techniques were effective, yet others were ineffective. This paper will take a close look at the assorted styles of leadership found throughout the film. It will also shed some light on what styles worked and which could have been more effective.
But first, you should have clarity of your own identity and knowledge. Once you have your own foundation with being a leader, I think that as a leader you can transition and understand the behavior of others that may be on your team. When acknowledging others on the team, I think that it is important to identify strengths and weaknesses of others and the team. The research shows that the coercive and pacesetting styles have a negative correlations on organizational climate while the other four styles have a positive impact. Thus, except for unusual circumstances where coercive and pacesetting styles might be appropriate, leaders should normally use a combination of the authoritative, affiliative, democratic and coaching styles to achieve success. The best leaders will sense from their emotional intelligence when to use each of these styles. Therefore, perception impacts team dynamics through the manner in which the members that make up the team view the formal factors in the organization, such as the goals and their expected roles in achieving them. The reason perception affects this process is because if the team members can’t perceive the goal of the team properly then they might not be working towards it. Ultimately, the team faces a gap between what is required of the individuals and what is actually being done. For instance, an online shopping store has identified its main corporate goal is to gain trust and confidence of its clients, built on its promise to deliver orders to their destinations as promised, the manner in which the employees perceive this goal will affect the way in which they work toward accomplishing it. Employees may not have the same understanding of this statement.
There are four main core theories in Leadership; they are “Trait” theory, ‘Transformational’ theory, ‘Situational’ theory and ‘Behavioral’ theory. “Trait” theory refers to people who born with certain specific characteristics; Surgency, Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, Adjustment and intellectance. People born with these characteristics can become a leader easier because they already have what basic requirements of a leader. The trait theory focused on analyzing mental, physical and social characteristic to gain more understanding of what is the characteristic or the combination of characteristics that are common among leaders. Transformational leadership refers to the leader moving the follower beyond immediate self-interests through idealized influence (charisma), inspiration, intellectual stimulation, or individualized consideration.
The major lessons for the military leaders to achieve the objectives of the National Military Strategy 2015 are a result of the evolution of the ways to fight the war, the relations among the involved actors and the use of the military to get political objectives. Bruce W. Tuckman was an educational psychologist, who carried out research in the theory of Group Dynamics. In 1965, he devised a model that describes how a group of individuals can develop into a team. This model defines four stages illustrating the team development process: Forming, Storming, Norming and Performing. These are the four predictable stages that a group of people will go through as it develops into an integrated team. The speed of transitioning from one stage to the next is strongly dependent on the Team Leader’s awareness, skills and competencies in managing the cycle.
Introduction Team leadership encompasses many things. It may seem like a simple and small task, but in a real sense, it is complex and comes with responsibilities, and commonly, it determines the success of any team or a group. However, the value of teamwork should not be overemphasized considering that all organizations need individuals and personnel who are willing to share ideas, listen to others and contribute to the problem solving of any given group or a company. Team leaders should have the ability, authority, and power to analyze data and information with a team of people with a common aim and objective as well as issues. The leader should understand the dynamic patterns, the connections and relations between paramount factors in these objectives, aims and issues that help in the analysis process.
These will allow me to apply the difference styles of leadership. In identifying my own leadership style (supportive), I discovered that there where instances that I would have to use a little of all styles. I think the best way for me to improve my choice of leadership style and to know when to apply the other styles will be to continuously expose myself and participate in formal and informal education classes. As I observe and learn from my own senior management and peers through questions, application and/or coaching; this will provide opportunities for me to constantly improve. As a leader and being positioned between the demands of management, team and the workers; leadership skills must include the ability to juggle the various priorities while keeping performance high and cost under control.
Responsibility - A leader should posses a sense of responsibility towards organizational objectives to get maximum capabilities out of employees. Self-confidence - Confidence in oneself is important to earn the confidence of the employees. A leader must be dependable and able to handle situations with complete willpower. Humanist - A leader must be sensitive towards employees’ personal situations and treat them with care and attention. Empathy - The capacity to understand the problems and grievances of employees and the view of the needs and aspirations of the employees that would assist in improving and strengthening human relations and personal contacts with the employees.
It is highly important the team leaders are trained keeping these issues in mind. It is necessary to bear in mind that “one size does not fit all” hence it is important for leaders to have a situational approach as mentioned in the discussions . 3. Leadership styles and team Productivity Leadership styles vary from person to person depending on how they provide direction, implement plans, and motivate people. The leadership styles practiced by transformation leaders will affect the outcome. Two of the most common leadership styles are task-oriented and people-oriented (also known as relationship-oriented). Each of these styles has their pros and cons, and either one can be perfect for any given situation.
