Genetic modification is a controversial field of science.
Advantages
1. GMO’s allow farmers to increase profits using less resources eg. herbicides
2. Increases the affordability of many foods feeding more mouths and contributing to the goal of beating world hunger
3. The introduction of vitamins increases the foods ability to prevent vitamin deficiency with people eating the foods for example vitamin A in rice “Golden Rice”.
4. The use of herbicides and pesticides are decreased therefore it is healthier to eat these foods.
5. Farmers can now produce bigger yields which will also decrease the price of foods as supply increases.
Disadvantages:
1. Claims have been made by critics that GMO’s cause certain diseases or illnesses
2. Studies have shown that certain GMO’s cause a few insects to be negatively affected by the crop which has the potential to affect the food chain.
3. The introduction of genes from animals into plants could cause conflict in some counties/ religions /population groups.
4. GMO’s are not cultivated in natural manner therefore it has the potential to cause damage to the environment.
5. Larger profits can be made in

It is done by taking a sample of the gene of interest (from Bacillus thuringiensis ) which is a bacteria which is found in the soil and also within the gut of many insects .this particular bacteria produces crystal proteins which are known to be insecticides .the gene of interest is then isolated using recombinant DNA methods taking it through a series of steps that separate the Fragments of DNA.
.This means the sample of DNA extracted from the bacteria will contain the gene which produces the protein which is an insecticide.
After cloning, scientists start the third step this is designing the gene to work once inside a different organism. This is done in a test tube by cutting the gene apart with enzymes and replacing parts of
However, GMO's are controversial because chemicals are used to alter the genetic information of a crop. Those chemicals can increase the risk for certain illnesses, such as diabetes and cancer. GMO's are meant to be the perfect organism, however many factors can go wrong with so much genetic modification since its going against nature (Food Policy Institute 2003). The process of how GMO's are created is through the help of gene transfer technology. The desired gene from another organism is placed in the other organisms genome
With superior positive environmental impact, quality and quantity of GM crops, why would anyone oppose them? The reason to support genetically modified crops is that they produce a superior amount of whatever they supply. Ian Murnaghan says that the increased production could be used to feed people in developing countries or overpopulated areas where enough food is not steadily available. The seeds of these plants may cost more, but the maintenance cost decreases significantly.
GMOs increase the use of dangerous chemicals, GMOs are not labeled, and we do not need GMOs to feed everyone. It is time that we stop consuming and producing these harmful crops. Imagine being an organic food, then all of a sudden an evil food scientist injects a needle into you, filled with genes of other organisms. How would you feel? Think about it, why would we trust something that has been around for only 30 years and has not been proven safe when we can trust something that has been around for 1000s of years and has been proven
Today, about almost every food that we are buying are GMO’s food. GMO’s are known as Genetic Modified Organisms, in which food has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through the process called genetic engineering. Over the past decade, this topic about GMO’s has been widely discussed, whether it is beneficial or harmful to our society. The majority opinion of the conservation is mixed. As stated in the legislative documents called “Restrictions on Genetically Modified Organism”, support for the introduction of genetically modified foods into the food supply held steady at 26 to 27% of respondents in favor over that time period, while opposition to the introduction of such foods fell from 58 to 46% over the period.
For one reason is that they are not healthy. According to The American Academy of Environmental Medicine it encourages doctors to have their patients to have a non GMO diet. The reason is that a study shows that it may lead to organ damage. Also it leaves material inside of us. The health rate of people with an illness jumped 9% in 1996 to 13% in 9 years.
To conclude everything, Gmos are extremely harmful for you. They can mess up a lot of your life. They are bad for your health. Even though it can be beneficial to some people, i have my own opinion. Everyone will always disagree with something no matter what the thing is.
One of the benefits of GMOs in agriculture is the viability of sustainable food production. A potential problem with GMOs is the possibility of cancer from high nitrogen and other chemical pollutant levels. These are caused by synthetic pesticides, potential waste problems, and genetically modified foods. I find the argument for non GMOs to be more persuasive because it avoids the potential of cancer, allergies, antibiotic resistance, pesticide exposure, and environment
Genetically modified animals involve the changing of the genetic information by adding or removing DNA sequences in an uncommon way that is not natural. Genetic modification aims to modify certain characteristics of animals and/or introduce new traits. Those traits include resistance of diseases and growth enhancement (Ormandy, Dale, & Griffin, 2011). Keyword(s): genetic modification What is Genetic Modification?
They also are way way better than non gmo foods because non gmo foods you can get diseases from them like heart disease and cancer and the chance of having a stroke when you eat though’s foods, But when you eat foods that have gmos in the foods then the risk of having them diseases. If you buy gmo foods you won’t have to spend a lot of money on the food that you would need but if you buy non gmo foods then you would spend a lot of money just on the food that you would need to
Food production has been a matter that has been disputed for years now because of the things that have been added to crops. While pesticide helps keep other organisms from taking crop harvest, it has also added chemicals into the food that we consume; chemicals that should not be inside of us. Genetic engineering would allow for the natural modification of food to provide DNA genes that can be used to act as a shield against pests and diseases. With the DNA modification of crops, there would be no need to
With new technology and advancing sciences, genetic engineering is on the road to major developments and studies pertaining to human genomes. In order to edit genomes, scientists must use precise tools and methods, like CRISPR, to insert, replace, delete, or modify genes in DNA. One strand of CRISPR’s specialized DNA works with a Cas-9 enzyme that acts like molecular scissors yo naturally recognize virus DNA when it enters a bacterial cell and destroys it with its own associated proteins. By taking control of this bacterial cell organelle, however, scientists can provide the guide. Scientists use CRISPR and its special enzyme because the overall method has the potential to correct genetic defects, treat and prevent the spread of diseases, and
This essay will look more on the advantages and disadvantages of genetic engineering. Genetic engineering has some advantages. Firstly it allows for faster growth rate .Genetic engineering allows of plants or animals to be modified so their maturity can occur at a quicker pace outside of the normal growth conditions that are favourable without genetic changes as well .Secondly, it may also provide a cure for disease to improve health (apecsecadmin, 2014). Genetic engineering can be used to eradicate a number of incurable and deadly disease which could be done by identifying the genes that cause these disease, and manipulate them to prevent people from contracting these potentially deadly diseases.
With this technological discovery, scientists can combat different diseases and limitation we faced as a human being. Having the ability to edit and correct genetic information manually, gives an enormous advantage to combating the
According to Wikipedia, Transgenic organisms can be defined as, “an organism that has been genetically altered by adding genes into, and out of, the organism to achieve the desired outcome, this process is called genetic engineering. Genetic engineering is made possible through certain techniques within biotechnology and bioengineering”. More and more organisms, including plants and animals, are being modified today. These processes are justified based on their supposed “endless benefits”, but at what cost? This leaves us with concerns about whether these processes are ethically correct and whether it is appropriate to use these organisms as a means of producing things such as pharmaceuticals.
This is because the better trait is produced by engineering genes which results in favoring one organism. Genetically modified organism can interrupt the natural process of the gene flow. A possible issue with the modified crop genes ending up in the soil which can produce new strands that can eventually attack the plant species and producing a new strand. Genes from the GM crops can spread to organic farm crops threating the diversity in agriculture. Due to cross pollination to non-gm plants, new hybrid strains are created.
