One It was a brisk September night. A statement many would take to be about the weather, and while it was brisk outside, the attitude surrounding September 15, 1953 is truly, brisk. What do I mean? Well, brisk has two meanings which can be simplified down to the words “cold” and “fast”. One could say the events that took place that night were cold-hearted and executed very quickly. Thus, many would use brisk to describe this night. But enough of that, you came here for a suspense, mystery, and maybe even murder. Well I am here to deliver exactly that. It was magnificent, it would have taken Archie years to save up for it. He figured Archie loved her a lot more than he did.Yet, it still stung that his friend was getting married to the girl he sought after. To him, the name Sarah Franklin didn’t sound right. George couldn’t bear to be there anymore “Well it’s getting late. I’m gonna head out.” George stood up and threw on his coat “Ok George. Hey, don’t worry about the bill we’ve got it” Archie looked at her with an undying love “Thanks, Arch…” George had knocked back a few too many drinks that night, being responsible George did not drive. He left his car outside the pub. Knowing the worst crime ever committed in this town was loitering, he wasn’t too worried about his car. As he walked down the street the smooth jazz from surrounding clubs clashed in a beautifully chaotic echo. George took this time to think, how could he ever just be friends with Sarah? He sluggishly arose from bed and trudged over to the phone still half asleep. “Hello?” George groaned “Pieni!” A stern voice shot through the phone “We need you down at the station, now!” “Captain? What’s wrong?” George wanted a little more information before he gave up his day off “I can’t discuss this over the phone! Get down here now!” The phone clicked What could possibly be so important that George needed to go in today? They had other detectives. Why couldn’t Archie come in? Nonetheless, George threw on his work clothes and quickly ran a come through his matted honey colored hair. George arrived at the station was he was quickly thrown into a car full of other detectives. Johnson, Louis and Hewberg were all preparing notes and documents. George needed to know what was happening, maybe these guys knew. “Boys, do you have any idea where we are going?” “No idea Pieni! We’re getting briefed when we get there.” Hewberg chimed in Now George’s anxiety started to run high. What was with the secrecy? Why is every detective in the district being shipped off to some unknown location? George couldn’t stand not knowing
k. Outside the winter storm was picking up. Pedestrians were scampering like frightened puppies for shelter against the clutches of the swiftly falling snow powder. He took his reading glasses off, and then set them down carefully next to his manuscript. Officer Bob Evans was in charge of George’s investigation which was commonly called “Unique” because of the nature of the crime. It’s supposed to be a very significant scene, so maybe that’s why it was written easier to understand. Unfortunately, it’s what thus starts George’s quick decline from prodigy to nobody. His ‘self eulogy’ passage brings the tone once again to being the serious tone from a majority of other passages, but especially with the final line of: “But Papa- I’ve tasted the gold.’
