I: HISTORY OF ARLINGTON:
George Washington married Martha Washington (Dandridge) on January 6, 1759, two years after her first husband’s death. Martha had four children, but none with George. The children’s father was Daniel Parke Custis, who passed away due to a heart attack. One of her son’s name was John Parke Custis. Then, John had a son named George Washington Parke Custis. When George Washington Parke Custis’s father died, he went to go live with his grandparents and they adopted him as their own child. Custis had inherited his father’s land, since he was the only surviving son. He had gotten extremely close with his grandfather/stepfather and in 1802, he starting building the Arlington House on the land that he inherited. Kennedy, are William Howard Taft, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Robert F. Kennedy, and Anita Newcomb. William Howard Taft was the United States 27th President and one out of the two presidents buried in Arlington, the other being John F. Kennedy. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was John F. Kennedy’s wife and she was buried with her husband. Robert F Kennedy was a former Attorney general and John F. Kennedy’s younger brother. Anita Newcomb was the first female surgeon in the United States Army.
VI: Present Day Arlington:
To be buried in Arlington today, you would have to have at least one active day of service besides training and an honorable discharge. There are more than four-hundred thousand graves that are identified and five thousand graves that are unidentified. Those numbers keep growing because there are twenty-seven to thirty burials a day on the weekdays and six to eight burials a day on the weekends.
