I think that George Washington made choices that directly benefitted himself. After learning about Washington, I feel like he becomes relatable. George Washington is often described in a way that makes him appear to be a flawless, strong, perfect, human being. In reality, he was just a mundane as I am. He made some excellent choices on the battlefield and poor ones as well. The same applies to his personal life. He married for status and supported slavery. These were poor decisions, but as he matured he developed a love for his wife and saw how horrible slavery was.
