His ability to motivate troops, strategic thinking, discipline, personal integrity, and commitment to the cause were all key factors that contributed to America's success. Without Washington's leadership, it is unlikely that the United States would exist as we know it today. Washington's most significant strength was his ability to motivate troops. He inspired soldiers by leading from the front lines and exhibiting bravery under fire (Fleming, 2015). This tactic made him appear fearless and gave confidence to the troops that they were fighting for a worthy cause. In addition, he also provided rewards for good behavior and punished those who broke military regulations (Middlekauff, 1982). By doing this, he established order and discipline within the army. Washington was also an excellent strategist. He understood the importance of logistics and supply lines for an army's success. Therefore, he spent a considerable amount of time planning routes of attack and analyzing enemy positions before making any moves (Chernow, 2010). As a result, he was able to win several crucial battles such as Trenton and Princeton despite being outnumbered. Another vital aspect of Washington's leadership was his unwavering commitment to personal integrity. He believed that honesty and transparency were essential virtues for a leader (Middlekauff, 1982). …show more content…

Washington wanted to protect his reputation, he worried about it often. He had high expectations to live up to and he didn’t want to disappoint his people. Although, many people at the time were quite disappointed after they talked with him because he didn’t have a lot to say and he wasn’t considered an “intellectual” (33). But what he lacked he made up for in the way he executed his decisions. Washington was a superb military leader being the commander in chief.

While these were major reforms, neither of these things required much strength or leadership skill, like that which Lincoln displayed. On the other hand Washington showed excellent leadership skill. His prowess as a military general was proven “on the field of battle”(Weston 4) during the Revolutionary War. His moral compass was another admirable trait of the leader Washington. Washington set the precedent for future presidents through the “tradition”(Weston 3) of only running for two terms in office.

During the mid-eighteenth century, following the American Revolution, the newly founded United States was in a precarious state. Many problems throughout the country aroused, based on the fact that there was no head to lead the nation. It was when the great George Washington stepped forth and led the country as the president of the nation. In memory of his heroic and substantial leadership, a capital city and state, as well as a dollar bill and quarter, were made after him. These dignified praises he so rightfully deserved, for he assumed his responsibility to lead the nation despite his longings for retirement, contributed to the structure of the national government, and favorably led the nation during his presidency.
He describes Washington's rise to the rank of general during the Revolutionary War and his leadership in the Continental Army. Ellis argues that Washington's greatest strength as a military leader was his ability to inspire his troops. He was not a brilliant tactician, but he had a charisma and a presence that inspired those around him. The American Revolution seems to be a lot more that just a war for the independence of the nation as it was also a revolt against taxes & the numerous trade regulations that were imposed. The American Revolutionary war was truly one of the 1st modern revolutions, which enjoyed a prevalent popular support from other countries all over the world.
