George Washington was unanimously chosen by the electoral college as the first president of the United States on April 1789 where he served two terms until March 1797. Washington selected Alexander Hamilton to serve as the Secretary of Treasury during Washington’s presidency, although he did a good job as Treasurer, his economic plans did bring split decisions from congress which reluctantly accepted his proposals to pay off national debt. The second President of the United States was John Adams who served his term from 1797 to 1801, Adams had a very troubled Presidency as he intended to keep diplomatic relations with the French but refused to get involved in the war in Europe between the French and the British. In 1820, the Missouri Compromise was passed which recognized Missouri as a slave supporting state and a division line was created to separate the slave free states north of Missouri and the pro-slave states south of Missouri. The election of 1824 was between Andrew Jackson and John Quincy Adams, this was a controversial in for Adams because Jackson won the popular vote but the congressional decision gave Adams the presidency. John Quincy Adams’ presidency was an effective one because he was able to reduce the national debt and create a strong infrastructure by creating major transportation systems and ordering the construction of the Erie canal. The political changes from 1800 to 1830 gave a rise to a more democratic government which saw the rise of the working class which voted for Andrew Jackson in the elections of 1828. The Jackson presidency was a very troubled one starting with the Indian Removal Act of 1830, which was an attempt to relocate the Native Americans from the land purchased through the Louisiana purchase.
