Colin Kaepernick has been sitting during the National Anthem ever since football season started. Many people have been following Kaepernick's example. However, one coach is going to punish players who decide to sit during the National Anthem. He stated that if he catches any of his players sitting down during the National Anthem, then they will have to sit down for the entire game.
Hume’s Discourse Concerning Natural Religion: Argument by Design as Proof of God? The enlightenment-age philosopher David Hume wrote Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion, which investigates the natural religious arguments of reasoning and experience on God’s existence. One argument brought up by three of Hume’s characters, Demea, Cleanthes, and Philo; is over the validity of the argument from design. Arguably, Hume is closest in his philosophical beliefs to the character Philo, a religious sceptic and arguer against design.
Jury convicted on weapons possession but acquitted on possession of the trunk contents. D’s argued that the guns were in the possession of the girl and they did not have possession. D’s challenged the constitutionality of the New York State statute which allowed a charge of illegal possession if a gun was found in a car occupied by all individuals
When a person sees another person suffering it may cause them pain. This constitutes their powerful system of empathy, which hints their thinking that they should do something to relieve the suffering of others. If they cannot help another, or fail in his/her efforts they might experience feelings of guilt. Humans make mistakes and many of them go down a path in their lives that can make them feel guilty later on when they finally recognize their mistake. This is evident in Paul D’Angelo’s self-narrative short story The Step Not Taken, when he the protagonist fails to help a man labeled as “typical junior executive” (D’Angelo) which leads to an epiphany of guilt and shows his true identity.

Conflicts can arise in many situations, but overcoming these obstacles is another conflict in itself. Just as in reality, there are many types of conflicts depicted in fictional stories; even the ones that cannot be controlled; and several ways that the characters attempt to overcome them. In the historical fiction novel, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, the main character, Bruno, experiences multiple conflicts. This novel is about Bruno's life, a naive nine year old, who came from an important and wealthy German family during the Holocaust. The Holocaust was a time period in World War II in which the Nazi Germans discriminated against Jews and killed millions of them throughout Germany as well as other countries in Europe.
The famous speech “I have a dream” from Dr. Luther King Jr. is clearly a persuasive speech. Based on this idea, we can easily recognize some communication patters associated to any speech that aims to influence another person’s attitude, beliefs, values and/or behaviors. Pathos is primordial in a persuasive speech as a method of convincing people with arguments drawn out through an emotional response. First, Dr. King speech needs to demonstrate that there is a problem that affects them and tries to show up that something needs to be done. He uses magisterially some illustration while explaining why they cannot be satisfied: “bodies heavy with the fatigue of travel cannot gain lodging…”
Patrick Stokes’ argument provides a brief example of how the belief that everyone is entitled to their own opinion creates problems within our society. In that, just because you are entitled to an opinion, does not mean you are entitled for your opinions to be treated as “serious candidates for the truth” (Stokes 2012). He specifically focuses on how a non-expert might coin the phrase, as a final objection against an ‘expert.’ As an example, he uses the debate surrounding vaccinations and autism. Here, Stokes argues that although this has been disproved by scientific experts, people who are completely uneducated on the topic will still shout back their opinion, because of the existing conflated sense of entitlement.
In his pre Father’s Day essay, “Does Fatherhood Make You Happy?” Daniel Gilbert, an author and psychology professor at Harvard, points out how parents, specifically fathers, would think that their children make them happy, but that studies prove the contrary. Gilbert argues, that paying a lot for something is bound to make people happy, and that because, caring for children entails so much time and work, parents assume their children make them happy. Gilbert suggests, that although children do not make their parents happy all the time, the moments in which they do, surpasses every unhappy moment. He also claims, that because children take over their parents life, they become their one and only great pleasure.
