Giftedness may differ in different context and cultures, even in the school system, the beliefs and definitions may differ on what giftedness is termed to be, hence, there are now multiple meanings which relates to giftedness according to the Texas Association for Gifted Children. The National Association for Gifted Children, Washington defines giftedness as “Gifted individual are those who demonstrate outstanding levels of aptitude (defined as an exceptional ability to reason and learn) or competence (documented performance or achievement in top 10% or rarer) in one or more domains. A classroom environment, which encourages creative, divergent and higher level thinking and open- ended approach to learning will foster the emergence of gifted and talented students. Some characteristics of a gifted child in a classroom can be the level of vocabulary a particular student uses, they always strive for perfection, the gifted child is also very curious about many things simultaneously and they carry a high degree of leadership. I would ensure that I know of these attributes so I will be able to detect these students within my classroom and cater for them by making a profile for each child. This profile should house all the characteristics of the gifted child as it may differ from child to child. On the teacher’s behalf, this may be difficult at times due to time constraints and they may not even have enough resources or activities to keep up with the gifted child’s pace of work. As a teacher in a multicultural classroom, I must always be aware that my learners differ in many ways and I must always cater for all of their learning styles.
