Giftedness may differ in different context and cultures, even in the school system, the beliefs and definitions may differ on what giftedness is termed to be, hence, there are now multiple meanings which relates to giftedness according to the Texas Association for Gifted Children. A classroom environment, which encourages creative, divergent and higher level thinking and open- ended approach to learning will foster the emergence of gifted and talented students. Some characteristics of a gifted child in a classroom can be the level of vocabulary a particular student uses, they always strive for perfection, the gifted child is also very curious about many things simultaneously and they carry a high degree of leadership. I would ensure that I know of these attributes so I will be able to detect these students within my classroom and cater for them by making a profile for each child. This profile should house all the characteristics of the gifted child as it may differ from child to child. There are numerous misconceptions of gifted learners and also teaching gifted learners. After completion of the Distinguishing Myth quiz and scoring a 62 percent, I realized that I could distinguish the difference between a myth and a truth about a gifted student. According to the Distinguish Myth Quiz, Students who are gifted and talented should be given experiences involving a variety of appropriate acceleration-based options. Educators of gifted learners are always looking for ways to provide challenging lessons and this taxonomy exposes multiple ways to do so. Burns did a phenomenal job of explaining the taxonomy, defining the categories, identifying the steps, and providing examples in order for the implementation to be successful. Issues of cultural diversity are more focused, especially in the class room setting. There are several techniques that may be applied to teaching to accommodate students of diverse backgrounds. Teachers must first be aware of stereotypes, ethnocentrism, and biasness. They should apply management techniques to the physical space as well as students’ behavior. Henry Wadworth Longfellow, and American poet from the 1800s, said, “Men of genius are often dull and inert in society; as the blazing meteor, when it descends to earth, is only a stone.” This concept I explained by, Malcolm Gladwell in his book Outliers. He devotes chapters three and four to discussing “The Trouble with Geniuses.” The theory he outlines in this section of the book discusses how much of a factor high intelligent quotient is in determining success, versus how important upbringing is. He examines geniuses, who are commonly considered “the true outliers,” and their successes.
